A few guys have posted having succesfuly pounding out the two dimples inside of the mag tube to get 3 rounds into the mag.. Well i had no idea about the dimples before purchasing and also picked up a +1 extension i would immediatly notice would be a no-go as soon as i took the mag cap off haha :p

What im wondering is just HOW did you guys pound out those dimples? Being that they point inward and arent right at the end of the tube.. What tools/technique did you use? A short write-up or some pics would awesome. Cheers guys!

Some people drill out the dimples on newer 870's and others use an appropriate sized cylinder that fits inside the mag tube tightly and then drives them out. Think socket from a socket set.
Are you sure the dimples need to be removed on the 8.5? I thought all you had to do was take out the plastic ratchet piece.....

There is a specific tool designed to take out the dimples. They sell them at Brownells, that or a gun smith can do it for you. It is fairly easy to do, just need the right sized tool. I have heard that drilling them can damage the mag tube on some 870s as they are too thin.

Any idea what that tool would be called?

Probably the same tool that takes dents out of thin shotgun barrels.....
Have you tried loading 3 in your gun as is with the plastic ratchet piece removed?

I looked it up for ya. It is called a magazine tube dent raiser according to brownells. I think to get the 3 capacity you will have to do this along with getting a shorter follower. Good luck.

Here's a simple square tube dent remover.....you could make one for round tube as well.

If you can support the tube on the outside with a tube slightly larger that just fits over it you could probably do the work easily with some needle nose vice grips and a small block on the inside to push on the dimple.

I used a socket, and then filed what was left of the bumps smooth, and yeah the dimples have to go, or things get hung up. If you go with the plus on extension, you may need a bit longer spring

used the socket method, did alittle work with a 1/4" punch on the outside once the socket was in place to smooth everything out. threw the +1 on and she JUST holds 4! the springs works but i may cut an extra spring i had for another 12g i had laying around. heres some pics. what do you think guys, too ugly? i think it sort of adds a rhino like quality.. haha

If it barely holds four now, it probably won't anymore if you put in a longer spring. it looks okay, but to be honest I wouldn't worry over the extra shell

Could I not just use a round file to file the dimples out? Will it leave holes if I do so?

You will be thinning the metal and depending on how far you go you will either end up with a hole or very thin metal.....why not just push them out?
It's not rocket surgery and the area affected is under the barrel lug if you get a little crude with the tools!

Saennor,
You should consider a 12.5" if you want 4 rounds.
In my opinion these guns should come from the factory ready to hold 3 2 3/4" shells in the magazine.
