Just wondering if a +1 extension would fit with the proprietary forend on the 8.5" Grizzly? I'm comfortable with it sticking out a little. After all doesn't the 870 Mariner mag tube stick out a hair? Anybody done this? Just toying with the idea and wondering the logistics.

I don't have a Grizzly and don't know what the forend looks like, but assuming the magazine tube has an end cap, it should work... the forend has to have enough clearance for the magazine end cap, so as long as the nut on the magazine extension is about the same size as the original end cap, you should be good. The issues would arise if you've got something on your barrel, in front of the magazine, that would interfere with an extension (like the Ithaca Model 37).

As for it extending beyond the muzzle... I don't think there'd be any issues if it's a 1/2" or so. I think it's more of a cosmetic question than a functional one.

Ah, that, I don't know... can you buy an extension made specifically for the Grizzly, or do you have to modify an existing 870/590 one? If you can get an actual Grizzly magazine extension, they I suspect it would include all the necessary bits - including weird retaining caps - to attach it.

it would fit, but would look pretty dumb.
whats the point of buying one of the shortest shotguns you can own, and taking the ballistic hit of an 8.5" barrel, just to lengthen the gun with a mag extension?
if you want a higher round capacity, buy a 12.5" Grizzly or Dlask barrel.

It would only stick out 3/4" or so, and it's been set up with screw-in chokes, so the ballistics are much better than a 12.5", plus I don't think it would look bad at all, like a bad little beastie with an underbite. 3+1 would also mean I could fit everything in my 4-shot sidesaddle into the gun. The 870 Mariner mag tube protrudes a little bit, wouldn't be any different as far as I'm concerned. If I get the custom +1 from TacOrd, I'm sure he would Teflon it to match the rest of the gun, which Casey did for me. Here's what it looks like now.

I think it looks pretty good... and I agree, choke tubes are a good reason to keep the 8.5" barrel, and who couldn't do with some extra magazine capacity?

I'm justifying the standard 4 round magazine on my Ithaca the same way... I'm planning on getting 4-shell sidesaddles, so when I load the magazine I only handle as many shells as it'll fit.

The DA shotgun is based on the Remington Express Magazine tube.
It has dimples at the end of the tube to prevent the use of extensions.
Unless you remove the dimples in the tube and convert it to use the spring loaded ball plunger retainer (Wingmaster) you won't be able to load the additional shell.

I believe that the magazine tube can be modified to allow 3+1. There are members on this forum who have done it. Wait for one of them to chime in.

okay man i now know that there are a few things that i envy you canadians for, and this is one of them!!!! you can own short barreled shotguns as if it was just any other firearm!!! whereas in the states we have to have a permit for them, and have to pay a tax on them, or you cant own one!!!! and i aint going to shell out the $200 transfer tax just because i want something that the barrel is just 10 inches shorter!!!! so i must stick with my 18 inch barrel for legal reasons!!!

uberfiend, choke tubes dont give you better ballistics, they affect how shot patterns and can dial in slug accuracy, or send it out the window. The 8.5" barrel loses a hell of alot of muzzle velocity, your slugs will drop alot faster and will have alot less energy than a proper 18"+ barrel. The way I see it, a 1 shot extension should add roughly 1.5"-2" if a 12.5" extends just past a factory mag cap, and a 14" w/ 1 shot is close to equal length. As MBP stated, it seems a little strange that you bought the shortest shotgun on the market and now want to make it longer. And FYI, nothing will contact the extension, but it will get staind from gases exiting the barrel, leaving a light gray stain on top that looks like spray paint.

Point taken, but I got the 8.5" for a song, and I was simply saying that my patterns with a choked 8.5" would be at least equivalent to an unchoked 12.5" or better. Not looking to change the world here, just wondering if I can squeeze an extra shot into my pack gun.

an extended choke tube would be a nice looking way to accomplish that with an extension. I'm surprised to see them selling for good prices, theyre usually worth about $450 after theyve been used.
