There's no disputing we have fewer Grizzly than BC but it's not a good idea for hunters to quote numbers that seem to be provided by people who support a Hunt ban or have an anti hunting agenda or people using bad "science" to determine the population.

There are Grizzlys in Alberta now where they haven't been seen for 60 years. The closure of Grizzly hunting in Alberta is half political, and half the result of Indian and now Metis killing them for profit or just because they can.
BC and Alaska are the best area's for bears and goat's that is without question.
Not sure of the source, but I assume it was conducted by Albertas biologists, I read it when the Alberta grizzly hunt was cancelled. Thier numbers were 1000.
I agree with you about using proper science to estimate grizzly numbers, whihc is why I keep asking the question, but noone here really seems to have an idea.
The anti hunters peg BC's populaiton at about 7000, most other sources estimate between 16-25 000.
If only one group offers an estimate, only one groups numbers will be used, so far I havent' seen anything on this thread that offers anything except "the 1000 estimate is BS and there woudl be no bear problems if you shot them all like in Alberta"
I just saw Officer Chris Doylein the Dyke in Squampton looking for fishing poachers. He mentioned the rather large amount of bears in the area at the moment. I assume he means blackie but the other ones are around up the valley.

I have never heard of a "problem" griz being shot around here lately. The last one I know of was something like 15 years ago and it was shot and wounded by a woman as it tried to break into her house south west of Mayerthorpe.
I do know for sure that in 1998 when they were trying to relocate some of the 13 bears at the Swanhills dump they were running out of places to put them as the habitat carrying capacity was believed (at the time) to be full.
I also know there there WILL be a Griz attack and/or one shot around here in the next few years. That is a no-brainer. Griz Numbers are going up, and new age "we can occupy the same place at the same time" thinking is taking over. Kudos to old school Fish and Wild life guys like Ken that have been taking action and keeping the bears from becoming habituated to humans. That is the start to most of the problems.

dont worry about being harassed about carrying your gun, and you will not be bothered by any wildlife attack, i carry mine, and in prince george was harrassed too, i dont care whats politicly correct i will continue to carry it, if i cant carry my gun i am not hiking,, wade

Anyone that isn't too picky about a bear can fill 2 tags rigth now.
One thing that NEVER gets mentioned in the discussions about the Grizzly population in Alberta is that the provincial estimates DO NOT INCLUDE ANY NATIONAL PARKS, which in Alberta include Jasper and Banff National Parks, which are primo Grizzly habitat, and Waterton Lakes N.P. as well...

A guy who works for the same company I work for got attacked by a Griz this summer in the Kootenays while on the job, luckily he wasnt' alone and his partner managed to save him with pepper spray etc....he's still recoving from puncture wounds etc....lucky to be alive I think
Here's some of my bad science. Alberta Grizzly need ALOT more realestate to survive compared to their BC cousins due to food availability and climate. As a result our bear are far more territorial and aggressive. As I've said many times before, Timithoy Treadwell would have got enough footage for a commercial if he had tried his theories with Eastern Slopes Grizzly. There has never been a comprehensive study done of our Bear numbers so to say the population is in jeapordy now, given that we never knew what the numbers were when the population was considered healthy is bad science.
