Or was the initial study manipulated to show a lower than actual number, to get the grizzly hunt cancelled?

I find it hard to believe that the Previous Governments of Alberta would fall to a conspiracy or pressure from an environmental group .
I am sure you know that those bears have a huge need for territory and we as humans have been expanding into theirs for years.
Maybe the biologists didnt do a complete job back in the day and the Bears have been expanding their range and their population as well.
I'm thinking the biologists didnt do a complete job because of lack of funds or other pressures.

My trail cams have taken photos of several Grizzly bears about 40km from Calgary over the last few years. My budy just sent me some nice photos of a Griz by Bragg Creek this past week.

Seen more grizz in the last 5 years than in the previous 20 years.

I am wondering about this also. I frequently go to the Yukon and had never seen grizzlies there, just lots of black bears.
But over the past five years, I have been seeing grizzly bears in the central Yukon (Carmacks, Pelly Crossing). Whats up?

We have to be careful when trying to determine number. Are we seeing more because we are getting into places that we could not access years ago. Also, we have moved more into their turf due to logging mining etc... Not to mention the big back to nature building boom in acreages.

If they are pressured in one valley then they move to the next which may be one closer to people. Time will tell I guess.

Nope and nope. Nothings changed in that regard. I have pics my grandfather took of htg in the livingstone range(camping in clearcuts). Only difference is quads now instead of horses. They've expanded from the mountains/foothills to the flats now. Black bears are getting pushed further ahead of them.

I've only seen two Grizzly Bears in my life. One In Jasper, just outside town and one on Moraine Lake Road not far from Lake Louise.I was in Awe and thought they both was impressive Bears.Probably be a Rush hunting where they roamed.

It is my humble opinion that there are two things at play - very faulty methodology to come up with the benchmark number of bears (Stenhouse and co used bear data taken from around Hinton and used it to extrapolate across the Province - I think that was around 1992) and a bit of a "repreive" to bear habitat in some of the edge areas and due to logging, and additional vehicle restrictions have created some great Grizz habitat.

We have much better and thorough methods to gauge bear numbers (DNA studies on rub trees for example) and there are some areas (non motorized transportation allowed - huge density increase).

Disclaimer: my observations apply to south of the Bow river and are completely anecdotal.

My family has a habit of being chased by bears. Hope to not encounter one, again; too old and f'ed up to out climb them. So it would be a magnum and a ride in a P/U.

Anywhere they encounter us, is bad news for them. Perhaps the bears in BC are making a pilgrimage to the land of socialist utopia.
