im having a debate with a friend about using a 300 short mag on a grizzly bear .handloaded with a 200 grain bullet .i feel its adequite .he says no way .your opinions.

Depends if you are hunting the bear or it is hunting you.

A shot at an un-alarmed bear will work well if you put your bullet in the right place. For a bear coming after you it probably will work but I would be looking at a larger, heavier bullet. Personally I would start with a 250 grain 338 and go up from there.

I think your friend needs to stop looking at so much advertising trying to get him to buy a newer and more powerful gun every year. Your 300 short mag is more than adequate.

If your huntin Gbears the 300 short mag is more than adequate. If your thinkin about doin some close quarter combat with a Gbear, better be profeciant with any weapon you use. Size of your pill wont make much of a difference to the ending of the story, if it isnt hitting its mark.

More then enough stopping power. I was using a 300 win mag this summer along with my freind and he got an very large grizz.

You got it pal, 100%. So has the party that told him to quit listening to the advertising, telling him to always by a bigger gun.
I remember years ago, an old Norwegian trapper, living in the bush, in good grizzly country. He told me he didn't believe in light rifles for shooting grizzly. He said if you are going to hunt grizzly you should use at least a 303 British!
By the way, the grizzlies were just as big and just as tough then, as they are now.

thanks for all the info . i decided to try the flat laces trick .instead of the round ones.plus using some of the mink oil .
