Just wanted to get your guys thoughts. This will be my first season turkey hunting and can't decide on buying a ground blind or setting up in my camo on a tree.? What set-ups are people using out there? My hunting buddy says staying camo'd and tricking the bird is all part of the game, he doesn't want to "sit In a tent all day"
Let me know your thoughts
Thanks!

Blind.

Sure you can run and gun during the day, but these work great at dawn and dusk. Turkeys just ignore you - don't need to worry about keeping absolutely still when looking around. Keeps rain and wind off you and seems to help with any skeeters too. What's not to like?

Sportsman's Guide has piles of them cheap.

I have two Ameristep Dog houses which I love for turkey hunting. Very easy to put up and to take down. I got them on sale but I can't remember what I paid for them last year at Lebaron in Markham. I got a 23 lb turkey last year using mine.

Depends on what you plan on hunting with ? Just my opinion but I find that the only time I would use a pop up is when its raining or maybe if one was using a bow. I like to see and hear all the way around me and if I have a 20 gauge in hand , no blind is needed. If you ever watch Learning the Ropes of Wild Turkey Hunting DVD you will see a segment on it on how to disappear in the turkey woods without a pop up blind...

Can't stand blinds.... I am with Adrian, I like to see everything around me... I also like to get up and run and gun and not have to worry about leaving anything behind etc...

Have used the Hunter's Specialties portable ground blind for years and haven't been busted yet. It's relatively cheap, fits in a vest, adapts to any terrain and blends well with any existing foliage. the thing about it I like the most is that only your head is exposed so you can get away with fidgeting or preparing to mount the gun. On rainy days or trees are not around I have used the little Ameristep Gunner blind with good results.

I don't like being restricted by a complete overhead blind... I want to see and hear everything around me and I want to be more intimately involved in the process... most of my birds have been taken without the use of any sort of blind other than good camoflage clothing and natural cover. For most pre-dawn set-ups I will use a collapsible die cut camo sheet with integral stakes as seen in the picture above. Your primary concerns will be good background cover and movement... get those two right and you will get your bird.

I'll use a blind if it's gonna be raining pretty good, other than that I like sitting on the ground with the ability to shoot 360 degrees and move if I have to. Plus I think trying to stay as motionless as possible so as to not be busted is all part of the game.

x2 on the doghouse but maybe cramped if you shoot bow. My draw length is 26" and at full draw I'm touching the front and back walls. Perfect for shotgun. I bought mine from Bass Pro on sale for $70.00 last year

I just bought something similar to this from Canadian Tire in Kingston last weekend for $18 on sale as my back up. I'll stuff it in the knap sack if I need to set up fast.

I have shot turkeys both ways - sitting at the base of a tree and out of an Ameristep G3 blind. For the cost and effort of throwing it in your vehicle, buy one. I have one set up on the edge of a field where there really isnt any good cover and shot a nice bird last year out of it. Blinds also makes life a lot nicer when it is raining, snowing (last year), your with your kids (cant see the motion), etc. You can still run and gun and come back to the blind if you want to.

Run and gun is what I like, I hate being tied to one place, the only time i would use a blind is if I had a child/young hunter with me. With a blind you can get away with a lot of movement but you are stuck sitting and waiting, its just not for me.
