Do you need a small game licence to hunt Ground Hog on private land in Ontario?

I've searched around and keep finding contradictory responses to this question. The posted 2007 regs don't help either, as they don't mention ground hog (or any variation of the name that i know of) within their Small Game Section.

Anyone know for sure? I AM planning on getting my hunting licences within the next few weeks, just wondering for the interim.

Groundhogs are fun as all hell when they're out...
get your license taken care of, and enjoy the hell out of em Nathan.
Groundhog hunting is one of the best things for practising long range shooting.
Do you have guns currently for this, or are you looking to purchase something specific for Dirtpigs?
 
Yeah - when I was MUCH younger I used to shoot ground hogs with my 22LR Semi. I just recieved a new bolt 22LR that I bought of the EE that I'm planning on using to hit them out at relatively short ranges.

I'm planning on working my way up to practical long range type shooting and see ground hogs as being a good practice to start back at the basics, with a 22LR, then continue to move up on the caliber and out to further distances accordingly.

I'm really looking forward to it, just have to wait until the next hunters course here, which is May 12th. It'll be worth the wait though. In the mean time I'll head out to the range and test out some different ammo and put together a basic data sheet for some subs to use.
 
if you want to hunt anything legally, you need a hunting license;)

if they are causing broken cattle or horse legs i think you might be able to shoot them without a license because in that case, you are protecting your property. not sure though, maybe someone else knows the answer.
 
Wow, this thread brings back some memories. :D

Growing up in southern Ontario, me and my buds used to pop ground hogs for the local farmers for a bounty. Me and my little Cooey .22lr semi bagged loads of the little buggers and quite a few bunnies for the stew pot while we were at it!
