What's the average grouping for a standard un-modified .22? Last time I shot my Ithaca X-5 I mounted a 4x scope on it and it must have been grouping around 1" or so @ 50yrds. (guestimating). Is this a wide group for that kind of range? I know it is fine for what I use it for, which is shooting crows and gophers, but just wondering your opinions.....

There are A LOT of variable to that question. What are wind-speds, what guns, ect.

With my cz, I am around 1/2 an inch at 50 yards. With my Marlin 2000L, maybe .4CTC at 50, with my coooey, maybe an inch, with my Valmet finnish lion, usually I am consistantly down around the 1/4 range at 50 yards.

If your happy with the groups you are getting then that is fine. Its more about your ability to read the wind, and read conditions more then anything, especially at further distances.

For me personally, 1 inch at 50 yards doesn't cut it. USually I like to be around the 1 inch or .8CTC range at 100 yards with my benchrest gun, but thats just me and I have to be shooting in ideal conditions.

I am talking about no wind and shooting off a rest, rifle type doesn't matter, just not highly modded like most of those 10/22's out there........

Ok. I have a highly modified 10/22, that will shoot maybe .35CTC groups at 50 yards, but I have another that will group tighter. Like I mentioned it my Valmet Finnsih lion.

But for just a good gopher shooting plinking gun, I think .5-1" is usually about average.

Black Bear: If your unsure of your groups or want to improve them...try some diff. ammo....and some of it is expensive....My Martini doesn't group well with most ammo but Eley, Lapua, and Fed. Gold Medal, all shoot great, and group well enough that I can shoot silhouettes out to 200 yds. Groups at 50yds. are around 1/2" with peep sights.

Yes, I have tried a few different types of ammo so far, right now I've got remington yellowjackets, CCI quik-shoks and CCI Velocitors so I will see how those group, I have already tried CCI stingers, some Federal "high velocity" crap from Cdn. Tire that didn't even cycle the action and jammed every second or third shot, and a few others. Most of the stuff groups the same, except I did not group the Velocitors yet b/c couldn't even get them on paper after sighting in the scope for yellowjackets, the Velocitors shoot totally differently but I think I may buy a couple boxes of them and switch to them to get the most power and range out of the .22 unless it's groups open up. They are expensive but maybe worth the price..... The groups may not be as tight as they could be since the rifle is atleast 30 yrs. old and not been taken care of very well by the previous owner, but I like it b/c I don't care if it gets wet or some scratches when out in the bush, and it still shoots straight and good enough for what I am using it for, which is varmint hunting.

An inch at 50 yards out of an autoloader is good, specially with a 4X scope.
To improve on it, I'd want a good bolt gun with ammo selected for the gun.
For good groups, you have to find the ammo that the gun likes. Even different lots can make a big difference.
I found my Cooey Ranger shot very well with Blazer of all things. Warming up for the postal match, I started getting 2 inch groups. I found my new box of Blazer was a different batch and doubled the size of the groups.

I noticed that the ammo you listed were all high velocity stuff. Have you tried some standard velocity ammo? PMC Scoremaster has been very good in my 10/22 and CZ Varmint (be warned that it has a different 'smell').

I don't think I have tried any standard velocity ammo except for one time I tried those federal premiums in the 550rnd. value pack, and none of them cycled in my gun so I think it needs the extra energy to cycle the action. I have never heard of the PMC before, who sells it? I'd be interested in giving it a try.....

I got mine through a local retailer here in Vancouver, not sure where you'd get them in Manitoba--found out about them on rimfirecentral. If you can't find any, there's CCI Standard Velocity, Winchester Target or Remngton Target. I'm pretty sure that the Federal value packs are high velocity. If there's a Wally World (WalMart) nearby, Dynapoints have been good for me as well...
