I'm in a bit of a bind this year, due to work it looks like I'll be unable to get out west to do any hunting. That said, I'm kinda' looking to do some day trips in my immediate area (around Edmonton.)

Does anybody know of any Crown land around here that would be half-decent for grouse?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR HUNTERS:
To hunt in this PRA, hunters MUST obtain a firearms discharge permit & attend a hunting orientation session; orientation sessions are being held at the recreation area Sept. 1, Oct. 13 & 27, & Nov. 3/06 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 2, Oct. 14 & 28, & Nov. 4/06 at 2:30 p.m. (discharge permits are issued at the orientation sessions). To register for an orientation session, call 780-922-3293. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: discharging firearms is not permitted within 400 metres of main staging areas or within 200 metres of Meadow, Lost Lake & Running Dog backcountry shelters (obtain a site map for staging area & shelter locations); motorized access is not permitted beyond main staging areas. Elk Island National Park abuts the north boundary of the recreation area (a 7-foot fence running east & west between the park & recreation area delineates the boundary); hunting in a national park can result in a fine of up to $10,000 &/or 6 months imprisonment.

Thanks for the tip Win, but I don't think I'll be able to attend any of these "orientation" sessions.

If you're an AFGA member, there's a bunch of conservation properties that can be hunted.

Also, grazing lease info is available here: h ttp://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/land/recaccess/publiclandaccess.html

Jackpine grazing reserve is pretty good for grouse. Its about 50 minutes west of town, and it's normally pretty easy to get access, you just have to call the office and get the rules.

Have you tried calling the Edmonton office?

There's a chunk of land down by the Sherwood park range that ought to have some birds.
