This month I came into posession of a matching 1939 Erma Werke action. It does NOT have the correct bottom metal, though I do have a WaA214 trigger guard I can slap on it. Everything else is matching, original, not renumbered. All chickens and swastikas intact. Everything is great about it and serial numbered matching original from the factory, WaA280 marks everywhere as it should be. Only thing done to it is the blueing was removed from the bolt body and extractor. It's still a nice tight action, so I suspect it was chemically removed.

I suspect this receiver was a vet bringback before it got badly sportered and my gunsmith salvaged this excellent receiver for me. By "badly sportered" I mean the original bore was a sewer pipe, cut short, and sporter sights installed. It was in a parker Hale stock and was wearing CZ bottm metal - a real dog's breakfast, but the action wa GREAT and I fell in love... :)

I had intended to build a nice custom on it until some guys on a US board made me feel guilty about it and that it should aparently be restored (?).

So to feel better, if anyone wants to trade me a nice refurbed complete K98k rifle for this matching non-refurb receiver, I will go for it unless it's an RC - no RCs please. Otherwise, it's getting used in a build.

Words of support or criticism are welcome to help me overcome my moral dilemma.

By the way, the hinged bottom metal is MINE! :p If anyone takes me up on my offer, military bottom metal will be included, not the hinged floorpoate metal.

Its an awfully nice action...

When you posted it in 'July puchases' I was surpised that you were gonna 'make' something out of it

I think you should make a beautiful, mismatched K-98 out of it...A chicken is a terrible thing to waste

Except that I already bought a beautiful chicken-ed byf44 this month. If I make anything out of this it will be a 7x57 (.275 Rigby!) sporter as I need a Mauser action for that anyhow... Somebody save me from myself!!!

It is a nice action and I would probably restore it to original status but you should go with your gut on it. No matter what you do, it will never be more than a mixmaster of parts now after bubba took his saw to it so whether you add new sportered parts for a 7mm or restore it with 8mm German parts it will ultimately be the same result. That is my two cents anywho...

Why not build a nice 350 Remington mag or a .358 Winchester Mountain rifle out of it ???:)

Because I already have a .35 Whelen on a 1909 Argentine action and a .350 or a .358 would be duplication more or less.

I don;t have a .270/.280/7mm yet, so... ;)

Go ahead, make whatever you feel suitable out of it!

It has already been messed up by someone else so do what you want with it!!

IMHO Weatherby = yuck... I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. I'm old fashioned. If the cartridge wasn't a classic BEFORE ww2, my eyes glaze over and I lose all interest... lol.

Most of my guns are either named after famous pre-war people or are ww1 era military rounds... so no, no Weatherbies or Winchester Stupid Mags in my arsenal...

Since it was already hacked you should feel free to make whatever you want out of it so long as it is tastfull. If I had that action I would consider making a
2007 version of a K98. Synthetic stock as close as possible to the Wood K98.
A nice touch would be a chunck out of the stock for the bolt like on the original.
First rate iron site's and a barrel no longer than 20 inches preferably shorter.
Must have a bayonet. The Darth Vader Mauser.

Do what you feel is right for you either way.

Regardless of your decision don't play the part of the righteous because someone else sporterized an old milsurp.

If it is long enough, make it into a 9.3x62. If not, then a 9.3x57 is in order!!:D

WTF is a 9.3 what ever????

Dude....max er out in 8mm...load er up with armour peircing, incendiary tracer rounds....scream something in German....and blow holes in 1" armour plate at the range....

Make the old guys with 'hunting rifles' run away screaming like little girls...

BUILD A FLUNKY K-98 OUT OF IT:p :p :p

European equlivent of the 375 H&H!!Almost as powerful and still much admired in Afrcia!:)

Loved the imagery there!!:D :D

9.3 is too much like the Whelen. If it gets sportered it will be blued steel and fine walnut. You guys should trust me! My sporters are never "bubba work", usually cost several grand, and are done by top smiths ;)

That being said - it IS a nice receiver for this kind of alteration...

It's a nice receiver and should make for a good project. But, either way, it's still a reblued, mismatched project and will always be that, whether a restoration or a sporter project.

I would do the restoration rather than the sporter, then to top it off, maybe go for a high turret mount setup or a side rail.

As it is considered by african hunters to be the equlivant of the 375 H&H, or so I have read, I would consider it to be a couple of steps above the Whelan. That said I do trust you and look forward to seeing the photos!!
