I bought a GSG STG44 in .22lr, I find it often fails to chamber a round and often malfunctions several times per magazine.

Not sure if anyone else experiences this, it has fairly good reviews on Cabela's. Some people mentioned it could be the magazine, but I have 2 different ones with the same issue.

Anyone have any solutions?

Been using blazer high velocity ammo, it often doesn't chamber a round right after inserting the mag and charging the cocking handle.

The round will go halfway in slanted and the bolt won't close.

I'd field strip and check for dirty/broken parts and try some more types of ammo before you worry too much.

Did you buy new or pre-owned?

The manual says to use high-velocity ammo only. I found CCI mini-mags, or labeled semi-auto, 40gr High Velocity working 100% reliable with my STG.
The same ammo is being sold in bulk as CCI Blazer 40 LRN. People also recommend Winchester Super-X SS round point, but I personally didn't try it.

I mainly use the Federal bulk Champion stuff because I have lots of it, and have also used CCI and I haven't had any issues. Is it lubricated enough? The GSG guns need to be lubricated well to run properly. I also have the MP 40 version and it's works well with both those brands too.

When you're feeding the first round, are you allowing the bolt to slam home on its own or are you trying to control it by releasing it slowly???? Mine will have issues with the first round if the shooter tries to control the bolt.

Also, mine will not function reliably with anything less powerful than Stingers. To bad because it's a very accurate rifle with the Stingers and much better with Standard velocity.

As mentioned above try a few ammo types to see if you can find something it likes better. The other piece of advice is to burn through 1000 rounds or so. It improved function dramatically after that
