...and 2 part Newb question.

What is a good beginner safe/storage system?
Something that will store both handguns and rifles. Equal space for both.
I saw the Stack On safes at Canadian Tire but looks like they suit rifles more so then handguns.

Also....Whats the best method to store ammo?
Im going to set-up a small workspace in my basement. Just wondering if I should worry about moisture because it is a basement after all.

Thanks for looking,

E

Don't think a shelved safe with equal space for handguns and rifles exist. Rifles are longer and require more space than a handgun.

I put my ammo in the basement storage room. For safe measures, I just throw a few desiccant packs to remove moisture, if any.

By 'beginner' do you mean cheap , err, hmm low cost? I expect the Canadian Tire ones are cheap enough to get one for long guns, and another with shelves for handguns. If, by beginner you mean small, a good proper gun safe can be set up one side rifle, the other side shelves, and handguns, ammo et al can go in there.

In either case, buy some good sized desicant cans, (don't scrimp,) manage them right - by which I mean dry them out in the oven when the first indicator changes color - and you will be good to go. A bit of humidity won't hurt ammo you store in a basement outside of a gun safe, but few things are more disappointing than seeing that fine red bloom of rust on a decent firearm. Completely preventable with good, concientious care of the desicants.

for rifles i use a stackon (buy larger than an 8 gun).
for ammo, a stackon 8 gun beside it with homemade shelves.
for handgun, i use a Sentry safe, keypad access.< they are on sale at Walmart for $76 right now.

I have one called "Stack On 18 gun" or something like that. It has configurable shelving. I have it set up so one half of the cabinet is shelves, and the other half is for rifles. Might be what you're looking for. it is a cabinet and not a safe though, so its not solid thick steel, but its mountable to a wall, and will get you in compliance with canadian gun storage laws, and well keep honest people honest. Sorry for the low quality pic, took it with my cell phone quick to reply to this post, and there is not much light in the room where my cabinet is. You can see on the left side there is 3 shelves, and a forth top shelf that runs the full width of the cabinet, all the shelves are foam padded, the bottom is padded too. This cabinet cost me $250.

Beginner as in just starting not necessarily cheap. :D

DrGroove that is pretty much exactly what Im looking for at the moment.
I can always upgrade or purchase additional storage in the future.
And I can mount this one to my concrete wall to secure it better.
