Gun choice - junior shooter

Howdi Folks,

I have a 12 year old who is suddenly rabid to shoot trap/skeet/SC and his skills have very rapidly outgrown the cut-down Cooey single shot he started with.

Not sure what his LOP is but his birthday is the end of the month and he is going to be getting a nice surprise!

My question is, has anyone been down this road who can suggest a good "starter" gun with which he can be competitive and maybe grow "with" for a few years.

Canadian sources for shooting vests and other youth gear is appreciated too.

I'd try a used, but otherwise very good condition, Remington 1100.

Extra stocks ( to adapt to LOP as he grows) and extra barrels
(Skeet, Trap & Sporting Clays) aren't that hard to find and are
not comparatively expensive. Additionally, it's not that hard to
"make" an 1100 stocks fit with respect to cast off & pitch. As
an initial start, a 26" or 28" choke tubed gun would be a good
choice. If he's been shooting a bit already, a 12ga. auto-loader
with 1 oz. loads shouldn't be a problem ... I've seen a number of
Sub-Junior shooters that have done well with such shotguns.

Should last him a few years to see if he "sticks with it" in a big way
... or gets side-tracked by girls & cars for a few years ! :D

Just got his New (to him) Browning Citori o/u 12 guage last night.

I thought it was a little heavy for him, but he loves it.

The autos seemed "too long" according to him.

I've learned from other shooting sports to "buy once, cry once."

He can shoot this one for a long time before his skill overruns his equipment.

Now I have to dig up that thread on patterning and try fitting it to him without messing it up.

First round should be Saturday. I think I'm more exited than he is. :dancingbanana:

Unfortunately we'll be on vacation in Newfie during the Atlantic Champs.

I do have an accomplished clay shooter in NL who has agreed to do a little coaching, so that will be great.

Anyone know if the ejectors are easily disabled on a Citori?

Don't know the answer to this, and I don't know that I've ever seen a citori with this done, but trick number 1 for junior to learn will be to catch the shells as they are being ejected from the gun. :)

You can get him a Beretta semi-auto with a reduced length. I think these are called parallel target guns. You can find them used now and again and they are perfect for small people, light weight and easy on the recoil.

Oldest boy (16) now has a nice used Citori XS with Briley 20 tubes.

Greg (12) is shooting extremely well with his 12 Citori, but I think I will get him a set of 20 tubes too.

Shooting a sporting clays match with all hands this weekend.

One more boy to go (7), then the wife to make a full squad! :D
