Good day everyone,

First I'd like to say, I am not sure if this belong in the Newbie section or general Fire arm talk.

I recently got my hands on my first shot gun (Remington 870 Express Sportsman Edition)!! Of course I had to take it out and give it a go. Shot a box of clay and went through about 100 rounds of the Challenger target loads.
I gave the forums a search trying to find anything on gun cleaning / care. I'm curious as to how often should be breaking the gun down for a good clean or just run bore snacks through.

I also have a Ruger 10/22 that I have probably put my first 1500 rounds through as well - curious about the rifle to.

Many people are different when it comes to cleaning. Looking for overall advice.

Any good kits out there as well I should be looking to get?

Thanks!

Hey there and welcome! My firearms all love bore snacks and I let them wash their snacks down with Hoppes and G96 plus a bit of oil on the slides/springs etc. Youtube is your friend when it comes to breaking a rifle down. Always check out a couple of videos before proceeding and have the laptop handy to pause/back up the video as need be. Good luck!

Awesome will do!
Is there an average amount of rounds you let through before giving a clean? or After a couple outings?

That's tougher to answer as there is personal preference versus necessity (ie shooting corrosive ammo). That said, after 1500 rounds, I would be cleaning the 10/22!

Every gun and different ammo types & brands all effect on how soon or often a gun needs cleaning. Some of my 22's can go a couple thousand rounds before you notice any performance loss such as jamming, or failing to feed properly. Still, if I know I won't be shooting a gun in the foreseeable future I'll give it a cleaning before I put it away.
