I just bought a .17 Outers brass brush....will it screw onto a 22 gun cleaning rod and slip into the .17 barrel.. or do I have to buy a special .17 cleaning rod...I have not picked up the Marlin 917m2 yet ...until this Saturday

Pretty good chance you will have to buy the 17 rod. None of my older cleaning rods will fit in my 17 Savage.
X2
Got a cleaning kit for my .177 cal(4.5mm) pellet gun, had to because nothing else I had would fit.

I bought a hoppes .17 cleaning kit for my 17HMR it was like 10 bucks.

The thing is these are steel rods. If you must use a cleaning rod coated rods like Nylon would be better then steel ones. And push the brush through the breech end and then remove the brush from the end of the rod after you push it through instead of pulling it back in. Saves from damaging the crown.

You'd think a BoreSnake or PatchWorm would be a better way to go.

Yep, shove a $10 cleaning rod down a several hundred $$$ gun. If you are going to clean your barrel, do yourself a favour and get a good cleaning rod, spent $30-$40 and get a Dewey rod, bronze or nylon brush and a jag with proper patches.
Then again, I think you can do more damage to a rifle by cleaning it then you will by shooting it, even it you do clean it properly.

I finally bought the Outers one piece coated steel with handle ..outer .17 screws right in..Thanks for the advice about not pulling it back..I didn't go to Wal-mart..bought it at Wholesale for $11 plus $2 for .17 brush..I get the gun tommorrow!!

Get some Weed Eater/Wacker replacemant line. It's Nylon and comes in different guages. The stuff I bought is .095" or 2.41mm.
Cut a piece long enough to pull through your barrel ( 10"-12" longer then the barrel) Light one end on fire and let it melt into a ball then carefully press it onto a hard metal surface and form a centered round flat mushroomed end. You might have to snip it a few times and try again.
Check it out for size with a spent case and shape it with sandpaper or a file or whatever till it's a little smaller then your bore.
Push a pin through your typical patch material and thread it onto the trimmer line and you've got a good cheap pull through patch cleaner.
Put a couple drops of Break-Free CLP or what ever gun cleaner/oil you like and pull it through. A Couple of passes and you can reverse the patch for a few more if you've got a second barrel to clean.
Works good for .177 - .22 bores.
