So have been shooting trap since the 70's but something happened to me on Friday that has never happened before. Closed my Ljutic mono for the second shot on a singles round gun went off into the dirt in front of me. Hmm other fellows said you must have touched the trigger ,no don't believe so but ok, next shot ok ,next shot again went off into dirt in front of my station ,muzzle pointed in a safe position and my fingers were around the grip not near the trigger. Ok something not right here put it away look at it when I get home. Home took it apart and for those that have not seen a ljutic it has no safety and is a single barrel trap gun with the simplest trigger I have ever seen. All apart some unburnt powder but really clean. Gun is not that old 8 years maybe 20,000 through it but internally looks great. Dry fired it into a snap cap after putting it back together 50 times never failed ,but am still spooked .Try it again on Wednesday but this really did shake me a bit,Wonder I use the opening lever also to close it ,any compilation there?

Have you noticed the trigger pull getting weaker? This is common with them and springs wearing out.

Trigger rebuild kits used to come in a 35mm film container.

Not sure what the deal is with Ljutic in biz or not. There is a guy on the grounds at the Tucson gun club i believe was trained by one of the Ljutic boys. Knights gun smithing or similar might try him and see if he has an idea.

So just to be clear, the gun was automatically dropping the hammer (or striker) when you closed the action? And now at home you can't get it to replicate that behavior?

I would think the opening button is independent of the sear/trigger/etc, doesn't seem likely that would be the issue?

When you couldn't get it to fire on its own with the snap cap, did you try both with and without operating the opening button?

Yes the hammer was releasing when the action closed.Tried both ways when dry firing could not get it to repeat. Spring issue sounds like a maybe but should not be an issue I would think with this few years on it.Had a 1979 Ljutic that had literally hundreds of thousands through it never had an problem.Try it out wednesday see what happens thank you for the input R

The OP pointed out well known safety behaviour when loading "hinged" guns...

Close the action with an upwards motion on the forearm instead of flipping it closed with a wrist "slap"...

Found it ,the trigger hammer pin is broken on the end allowing the trigger spring to shift around. This is why it would work sometimes ,and the crappy part it shifts around easily when barrel is pointed down (alignment ?) but rarely when it is level or pointed up, dry firing I had held it near vertical , now the next issue finding parts ...:(

Good you found it. I had an old Stevens double many moons ago and it developed a similar problem with the left barrel. My Dad told me not to load the left barrel or take the torch to it. I quit using it and kept it up over the main beam with a piece of chain locked down the barrel until the gun registry came and then I torched it. It had no value but you just hate to part with things.

Thanks for following up and letting people know about the issue. Hopefully parts are out there or something as simple as a pin can be made up without much trouble.

It's a valuable reminder that things can go wrong... Despite multiple pages of people insulting eachother and insisting that there's no such thing as an accidental discharge.

20k rounds might do this! Good detective work!

For sure, stuff happens, but there is no excuse for poor muzzle control! I always wondered if all the hubub would be about if " defective " guns and triggers would be a thing if in every case the muzzle was pointed in a safe direction like the OP's was- I doubt if there would be any injuries or fatalities in those instances!
Good to know the problem was sourced out.....

Thing is I fired it twice dry with snap cap worked fine then loaded it ,but yes suspected malfunction is a great reason to hang it up.Parts are in putting it together tonight.

As an added note could not get over the feeling that the gun was going to go off again so really suffered in the score department. Nothing wrong with the gun now but as we know this game is a mental one as well. Sold it off the rack to a good guy that had been admiring it for quite a while. He went out and hit first 3,missed one, then broke the next 96 straight with it .I know the gun works anyway and it seems the right guy has it cheers R.
