Wow, BHH is up there eh?

Mine are in a kennel in an unheated barn all day. They each have an insulated house with electric heater inside. They spend the night indoors with us. I feel bad leaving them when it's -30, but they aren't any worse for wear when I get back.

I must comment about advice to buy only from 'CKC or AKC registered breeders" - sorry, but I would avoid such breeders. The CKC has ruined several good breeds such as the Irish setter and the Weimaraner. I would much rather trust breeders who have their own breed association with strict hunt performance testing rules and a breed warden, such as the Verein Deutch Draathaar , the Large Munsterlander Club, and some of the Pudelpointer breeders.

I have always been jeaolous of guys who hunt upland game with a dog. That just looks like so much fun, but I have never owned a dog that could do it or known a hunter who owned one of these dogs.

But damn it looks like fun. To be honest, I am not finding deer as rewarding as I did when was younger, and I am a moose hunter only now. I love moose camp. Geese is great but the haggling and planning to get fields is so much work and has become so competitive here, there are too many hunters. It's not for me. Duck hunting is out too.

I can see myself doing this and loving it. Any recommendations?

I am thinking a spaniel?? I don't want a big dog. I live on an acreage and have two big Great Pyr's who stay outside. I don't want this dog out with them at night, it will be a house dog. A smaller one suits me more.

I am very open to suggestions and appreciate any help.

A Small Munsterlander would fit your criteria perfectly. They're not related to the large munsterlander, which are basically an off-colored German Longhair. CKC doesn't recognize the breed, though it's one of the oldest hunting breeds, but that doesn't matter in the least. They're very versatile, great with family and very affectionate. Their only downside, if you want to call it that, is that they perhaps mature a bit more slowly than some other breeds. They also don't respond well to heavy-handed training. There are a few breeders in Canada; ON,AB and BC I believe.
Check with the NAVHDA on the net for breeders.
