the wife and I have hunted ducks for years and she shot 10 ga and 3.5 12 ga and never no issue but recent shes been shooting skeet and getting bottom of her jaw bruised!! I tried shortened LOP and cast off but am baffled why this has happened to her shooting clays? could she be lifting head causing this or holding the gun too loose ?

thanks

Justin

Best bet is have an experienced shooter who knows his stuff watch her. You could even set up a video camera and film her to play back what is happening. That she is getting bruised in the jaw is a rare scenario for me. I have seen it a time or two from incorrect mount or gun slipping off shoulder during recoil from a slippery coat. Never seen it in a target shooting situation, only hunting.

I second what spank said that it might help to watch her. Is she using the same gun for skeet or has she changed anything with respect to the stock? If she has changed guns, or changed drop etc., then I wonder if fit is an issue and what the difference in fit is between her hunting gun and the present one for skeet. Is she trying really hard? I tend to tighten up and raise my head when I'm really trying hard for a second bird (no surprise here given my recent post). Or I really grind the stock into my jaw when I'm frustrated and worried about raising my head. Neither works, of course, and my neck and jaw get stiff. I hope you find out what's going on here. Sore jaws are no fun.

Usually, that is caused by improper pitch on the gun, assuming that she is staying in the gun. If you lift your head the gun make give you a little kiss. Try 2 flat washers between the recoil pad and the wood on the top screw of the recoil pad. If that has a positive effect, try 1 more washer (3 total) and then 1 less washer (1 total). Replace the washers with a wedge or trim the stock to have the desired effect.

Could be head lifting, but 687EELL is right, pitch has a lot to do with it. Pitch is the angle of the butt, where the pad attaches. Women need MORE pitch, especially busty ones, meaning the bottom of the butt must be even shorter than the top, more angle on the butt. /

You want to have as much of the pad touching her shoulder and touching it evenly not pressing one part of the pad in hard to get the rest to touch.

Hope this makes sense, if not we'll try again!

Also I know that you have said your wife didn't mind 10ga. or 3.5" 12ga hunting loads, but I'm 6ft and 230lbs and I mind those very much, perhaps she has developed a bad head raising habit to get away from all that recoil.

Where the x3 has recoil spacers we got rid of one spacer we used and I made a oak spacer that changed pitch Alot. I also made a lead plug for her gun to give more forward weight and keep gun from jumping. Ill have to get som pics of her gun mount

Thanks

Hmm, I sense a release trigger in the not too distant future? :p

Funny!

As you well know I am sure, you don't shoot boxes of those at a time, at least typically, unless you are a skybuster of course :D

Fortunately the only very occasional flinch I suffer is a visual one and it's usually because I haven't mounted the gun correctly and things look weird to the subconscious. Recoil doesn't really bother with a well fitting gun, but you certainly wouldn't find me firing boxes of hunting loads for any amount of time.
