Anyone ever have the odd problem where a hammer falls down and fires the gun when the thumb safety is pushed up to stop the hammer from falling ?

YES, I said hammer comes down and fires when safety is pushed up into (supposedly) safe position ????

My new STI has done this last night...getting it checked out tonight.....

Curious if any STI/SVI owners have this happen ? I got it with the new Alum. grip and not sure if somehow this new grip is poorly set up or designed...etc..

oh, odd thing #2, it wouldn't fire with mag in the gun...trigger being pulled back would touch mag before releasing trigger...

Anyways, too early to judge...

any feedback from others with this extremely odd and dangerous problem has occuried to them and what caused it... ?

One suggestion so far is that sear spring slipped out of place causing 1, trigger to not fully engage (explains why that happened last night) and then when I chose to stop pulling trigger and chose to pause and i pushed up safety, something connected with something inside and release the hammer.. ?

And I'll update ya'll when I know too....

The only time I have seen this happen is after an ametuer gunsmith attempted to tune his own trigger and ended up trying to refit the safety.
Has any work been done to the gun or is it factory standard?

My guess is that the leaf spring is not installed properly. It could be broken or the fingers are not bent properly putting the wrong amount of pressure on the safety, disconnect and hammer. When the mag is inserted it could be pushing the spring and therefore causing more problems. This could happend to any 1911 and is not unique to ST or SV's.

it seems to have been the sear spring is over sized and/or just not fitting well to the new alum. grip, so my gunsmith believes, and the spring was not doing its job proper and sear being left in position to go off by just merely touching the gun...wether i touched the safety or just looked at it hard, the hammer would have dropped
again, the gun going off when i touched the thumb safety happened a few times, not everytime...
some modifications and hopefully it's functioning fine...going to club to put a few hundred rnds. thru it...

Did you put the new gip on yourself?

seems it was the sear spring...slightly oversized to this grip..and now fixed....well, so far after 200 rnds. thru it...
