Pattern 14 rifle. Prior to Wolrd War One, the British were looking to replace the Lee Enfield rifle with a Mauser type and the Pattern 13 was made in prototype with a new 7mm cartridge. Suffered from many problems and when World War One broke out, the brits decided that switching during war would be too difficult, so they kept the Lee Enfield. However, needing as many rifles as they could get, the brits hurriedly changed the pattern 13 to 303 and called it the pattern 14 and placed contracts with Remmington, Eddystone(which was bought by Remmington), and Wincheter to make them. You have an Eddystone Patern 14 rifle, made sometime between 1914 and 1917, that has been sporterized.

No why on earth would someone cut the ears down and remove the apature sight just to drill and tap it for an apature sight?

Since the ears have already been removed, just about any mauser style mount will work. Just take it to the gunsmith and have him install the mount bases.

Don't even THINK of doing that yourself
