Gun manufacturer by serial number

Is there a way to find out the manufacturer of a shotgun, just by the serial number ?
I have a 12 gauge 14" 870 style shotgun but the only marks on it are the serial number on the receiver and 23/4 and 3" on barrel.

I was told it could be Wilson combat or something similar, but I've no real idea

Sounds like a Chinese 870 copy. For the price you pay, you can guarantee a Wilson arms will have their name stamped all over it (that is what you are paying for after all), and they begin with a wingmaster anyway so it should have Remington on it too, although I admit I've never actually seen one
