Can somebody recommend an oil that would be a bit longer lasting, something that you would use on surfaces that are inside the stock. Would a lightweight grease be a possibility?

thanks for any info

Sure hard to beat wiping it down with a cloth dampened a bit automatic transmission fluid.

I wonder if the use of wax is an option. I use it as a release agent because it wipes off ultra thin for bedding your action. (ie shoe wax, carnuba etc) It would also act as a protection against rust. May be worth a try. Cheers.

All those special gun oils mentioned, and several others, will work just fine. Probably as good as automotive transmission fluid.

atf is no good. it only costs a couple of bucks for a litre! i like atf, kerosine and paint thinner mixed in equal amounts. atf by its self is good to i use synthetic atf.

+ 1 on this one. Tranny fluid is cheap, durable, will take the pounding and not easy to evaporate. For lubing general metal to metal, also hard to beat white lithium grease too. None of these absolves you from proper maintenance and cleaning either.

I see what you've done there and I agree. I once looked up the whms forms, patent's and so on for many of the well known lubes. I found it safe to say they they are nothing more than individual concoctions, sharing one common ingredient...ATF. Scents, dies, maybe some solvent thinner here and there, but all pretty much the same.

Store a few guns for 20 plus years with a coat of stag oil for rust protection vs the others and you will think differently that old blue stag is by far the best I have ever used for that and g96 for guns I am using. Trans oil is apples and oranges to the stag and is hard on wood during long term storage not to mention it has been proven to cause various forms of skin cancer.
Not saying gun oil won't but gun oil is designed to be handled without gloves trans fluid is not.Just one old mechanics opinion who is currently battling cancer which the docs say was due to handling various oils etc for 40 years with no protection. But hey lots of guys as you see sware by trans oil and are fine so Who knows.
