Like the title says, with the registry gone do we need to have barrel lengths verified if it falls under non restricted? I have a 12.5 Griz barrel for my 870 reciever, just stick it on and call it done?

OAL 26 or over = NR - if you make it shorter you have 30 days to report and reclassify if the change is to be permanent. If the barrel is to be switched back and forward, you're in a grey zone. Remember not to store the firearm less than 26 inches long. If your 870 has a factory stock on it, it's fine even with an 8 inch barrel.

You are required to report the modification resulting in a change in status. The law does not mention whether or not the change is permanent, or how long the change lasts. Change the status, you must report it.
Example - take a n-r to the range, swap in the short barrel - you are immediately in possession of an unregistered restricted firearm.

Re: mares leg

Some points to consider:

- It is not a handgun (small butt stock)
- It has not been reduced in length by folding, telescoping, or "otherwise" (eg no tools)

Here is a mind bender for those that have forgotton the dicussion, or joined since:

Dear #########,
Thank you for your telephone call today with regard to the legal classification of the Remington 870 shotgun and the MCS system, ################################################xx ################################################xx ############. Short barreled pump action shotguns with folding stocks are controlled within the Criminal Code of Canada, and it specifically details that the firearm is reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by means of folding, telescoping or otherwise. The otherwise does not take into consideration replacement with commercially available stocks such as a pistol grip stocks. Thus it is very legal and does not change the class of a non semi automatic firearm if you put a manufactured short barrel and pistol grip on the gun.
