Looking for a big heavy gun safe. Something around 60" tall. I am about 2 hours out of Edmonton. Anywhere recommended to get a reasonably priced quality unit?

Costco has a really good fireproof safe for $350. I think its a 14 gun, weighs about 300 lbs

Just search for costco safe, their really popular on here

Ah, no problem Lenny. Just odd it got asked 1hr ago on Canadian Tire's website. They have a Stack-On safe 1/2 price ($350 down from 699) that I looked at today, so I went to see if there were reviews online.

I've tried to find this safe.... has anyone had luck finding it online? I don't' have a membership anymore so walking in isn't an option. I'd like to own the safe before I bring home any firearms.

I just looked at the Canadian Tire gun safes. Pretty good prices, but I think I would need the big one, or a couple of the smaller ones. Plan on 3-4 rifles and 4-5 handguns, plus ammo and maybe some papers. I like the idea of a "divided" safe, with shelves on one side and a rifle rack on the other.

I think on their website the price is around 700 for some reason

I looked at 'em too, today. The display model was locked. It seemed a bit too light, but the door fit well and would be hard to jam a prybar in it. Wish the walls and back were thicker steel... they didn't sound too solid when I knocked on it.

Still looking for a link on this costco safe.

Your talking about the can tire model? The costco is 100lbs heavier than the stackon for the same price

Yes, the Canadian Tire model. Just relaying that while it's better than nothing, at $350 it's just an OK deal and certainly NOT worth the $700 they normally ask for it. In my opinion, that is.

I watched a video of a very large, very expensive safe get knocked on it's back and pried open by two guys with big pry bars. No fancy tools, no cutting equipment, just sharpened prybars and leverage. The fact that the doors fit tightly on this model might save it from that fate, but the thin walls make me think they'd go through the side of the Canadian Tire safe.

I bought this one at costco

Around 350.00 but it was at the store without delivery, on the website the same safe was way more expensive, over 500.00...I guess it was the hiden cost of the (free) delivery.
They have this in store 2 or 3 times a year, it is not a regular item.

That's a nice safe. Do the sides feel thick? That's what worried me about the Canadian Tire safe... the walls felt like they could be penetrated easily. Plus it wasn't fire rated.

Canadian tire consistently has them on sale, not the fireproof ones though, but who really needs those, my gun collection isnt that expensive. Watch for the safes that have good steel bars that come out of the side of the door not those crappy ones that have the steel handle that comes sliding down over a slit as you close the door. I got my 14 gun safe with carpeting and steel bolts and combination on sale for like 60% off at 250 dollars. I also use a cheap cheap pistol locker for my ammo, just makes me feel better having it separate. I got this half price at tsc, they have great sales as well.

I'm also looking at it as protection for valuable documents for my family too. Passports, birth certificates, wedding albums, computer backups. As such, fire rating is excellent.

I have the one from CTC and its really good. I bought it when it was on sale for 40% then 2 weeks later they went down to 50% off so went back and had a price adjust done. The one at Costco looks really go but they didn't have any in stock when I needed one. If you're not in a hurry you might want to check the Costco one...

As for being easy to be opened, any thief with a little bit of experience will get any of those safes open. Its more of a deterent for me because most thief dont go around with the kind of tools required. The safe is also there to keep unauthorize access like my teen boy and his friends and I don't think they will come over with a crowbar either :D

Cheers,
