Gun socks

The ones that have worked for me are your run-of-the-mill Allen or Winchester from Canadian Tire or any gun shop. Most are silicone infused. Once you give your rifle a rub down of oil, it should soak into the actual fabric as to prevent rust ven further.
 
I'll second Ironballsmahoney's reply/post & to add-

Remove the bolts from bolt action rifles prior to "socking" & placing in the safe.

My socks are from Brownell's or Midway.

For double protection, I "sock" pistols & then put them in MTM in safe pistol storage boxes.

Any case w/open cell foam in it will absorb moisture whether the firearm is oiled up or not.
For a pistol in open cell foam box,put the pistol in a zip lock bag.

Could you explain MTM ? Not familiar with all the Firearm abbr.
 
So now that we are on the topic of bolts on the pistol forum, how does every one store their bolts? I take mine out of the rifle, oil it, place it in the bag it arrived in and throw it in a box with all the other bolts.

Assembled, in the rifle. No different than keeping the slide/barrel/frame of a pistol together for storage.

Never had a problem but I also live in a drier climate and keep my firearms in an environmentally stable room.

I keep the bolts seperate for the sake of space in the safe. All my other guns have crap haning off the sides so it drops the safe capacity by half at least. All the bolt guns live in the same safe so with the bolts removed I can fit them side by side with out having to leave slots empty.

When reading you comment I pictured a safe full of pistol frames and a bin full of slides.

Not if you're organized it doesn't.

I take my bolts out and put them on the shelf in the safe. If I have two of the same rifle in the same action length, I will only remove one of them so I don't risk mixing them up.

When you start hiding them or putting them in random places is when you can get into trouble. Or removing firing pins for storage. I used to work retail and occasionally had people coming in asking for replacement firing pins because they removed it "for safety" because they were too cheap to buy a trigger lock. Yeesh.

Had a friend pass away last year, his 19 rifles sold for basically scrap as no one could find the 19 bolts.
 
If you have to remove bolts to make enough room in the safe you have 2 problems.
1. Too many guns for the size of the safe. Or
2. Too small a safe for the number of guns.
Either way the answer is buy another safe.
