I just got given a pretty rare gun, The stock had some prolonged exposure to HOPPS 9 gun oil and has took the finish off the wood stock.
I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a gunsmith or person that refinishes older wood stocks from around 1967. I'm not looking to do myself as I want it too look as original as possible.

Thanks

good luck I have refinished a couple that suffered from overexposure to hopper & gun oil. If the wood has darken it is probably soft a slightly decomposed. Certain chemicals are not friendly to walnut.

Can't help with a gunsmith, however IIRC from the 1980s when I was rebuilding wooden rowing shells (rotted mahogany when water got into cracks) there are some products you can use to soak into the damaged wood-grain to firm it up and make it solid again. Then it can be stripped and refinished. If there's a hardwood specialty shop in Barrie they may be able to give advice on this sort of thing - and on how to do the refinishing yourself. I did a bit of a search and didn't turn up anything immediately, but since you're there, you can ask locals...

When I lived in Cambridge, these guys (below) were a 5 minute drive away (and Specialty Shooting Supplies was another 30 seconds drive from there) and had lots of good advice and materials. I made a set of orangewood grip panels for my 1911 from material they supplied.

Call Chris Wilcox from Wilcox Gunworks in Cherryville BC. 250 547 6480.

Won't be cheap but it will look exactly as it did when it came from the factory.

He is retired for the most part but will do work he finds interesting
