Gun Storage in Canada

What I'm wondering is...if it's true that in Canada all guns must be locked (e.g. bicycle lock...lock that came with the gun...or trigger lock) inside a locked safe at all times unloaded?

Here you go

Restricted and prohibited firearms

  • Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into; or
  • · Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.
  • · For automatic firearms, also remove the bolts or bolt carriers (if removable) and lock them in a separate room that is difficult to break into.

Leaving Any Class of Firearm in an Unattended Vehicle

  • Lock non-restricted firearms and locked containers carrying restricted or prohibited firearms in the trunk or in a similar lockable compartment.
  • If the vehicle does not have a trunk or lockable compartment, put firearms and firearm containers out of sight inside the vehicle and lock the vehicle.
  • If you are in a remote wilderness area and cannot lock your non-restricted firearms inside your vehicle, unload them and put them out of sight. Attach a secure locking device to the firearms unless they are needed for predator control.

Ok thanks guys. I thought the gun needed to be locked and put in a locked safe. Or so I heard. So basically "home defense" with your firearms doesn't happen. Just for range shooting and hunting. If you guys get robbed or your homes invaded looks like all you can do is pray nothing happens to you or your families. Even though you have firearms. Makes as much sense as in a few of our anti-gun states. Most states allow us to keep loaded guns nearby. Some place them on or in their night stands (not smart tactically but doable legally).

Call 9-11 and make the Cops come...
It does happen(home defence) but the victim (home owner) needs deep pockets to protect themselves from
Crown Council when they decide to become vindictive against the one being broken into.
Crown Council is our version of "The Sate" or "Federal Prosecutor"
What part of LA you from?

In Canada, we have a legal right to defend our ourselves or our families with any appropriate amount of force up to and including "deadly". As such, "self defense" is a legitimate use for a firearm. The sketchy part is how the crown interprets "appropriate". There are police members of this forum who have said it depends a lot on what you say to the officers who first arrive to the scene. Knowing the law concerning this and how it can be interpreted is very important if you intend to defend yourself from an intruder, as you may end up in court for a long time, costing you a sizable lump of cash (punishment by process).

For me, I would not hesitate to defend the lives of my family by any means necessary, regardless of the consequences.

Ummm.

You're right.

Just for range shooting and hunting.

That's why we don't live in LA or anywhere in the excited states.

Maybe I misunderstood your statement, but not all firearms need to be locked in a safe at all times. Non-restricted rifles require only a trigger lock if they are part of a display. So really you can trigger lock your XCR, mount it on your wall, and call it a display. 100% legal. And I would move to many of the southern states in a heartbeat if it was feasible from a career point of view. I'd rather be excitable than complacent.

Pacific Pallisades.

No one wants to have to draw their guns. Even if we're in the right. It would surely be one ugly mess. Legal fees. Did you get all the intruders? Were there a few outside that never came in? Etc. But in the end if you save lives I think it could be worth it. But living in CA or any anti-gun city or country it can be a very iffy proposition. Will you be made an example of even if you do say the right things to the police when they arrive.

This is all assuming we can get to our guns. I have considered moving to a gun friendly state (e.g. AZ, NM, TX). But it would have to be for more than my interest in firearms.

My guns are unloaded and in a locked gun safe next to where I sleep. I have a magazine that is all loaded up on the top shelf of the safe, All I really have to do is unlock my safe, grab my unloaded gun, take the magazine and put it in. And there ya go. Whether or not I have time to do all of this or not is up in the air. Our storage laws are pretty ####ed up tho, even the wording makes it hard for police and judges to understand. if the liberals had it their way, you would die before you could get to your guns to defend yourself. I guess they only want the criminals and police to have guns. Because we all know that the police are just a phone call away....

I have two small kids, one of them likes to get into everything she can, so the storage requirements have nothing to do with it, my firearms will always be trigger locked and stored out of sight/reach. Only I have the key to my trigger lock and it is with me 24 hours a day. My ammunition is stored away from where I keep my firearms and it is out of sight/reach as well. I know how curious kids get and it would be unthinkable if something were to happen. Just something to think about I guess if you got little ones running around.
