I'd like to pick up an inexpensive but solid gun vise for doing simple things like barrel cleaning and optics mounting. I don't want or need it for shooting at the range.

Lebarons  offers the MTM Case-Gard for $48, as can be seen here:

Looks decent. Does anyone have experience with this?

Another one I've found in a web search is the Tipton's Best Gun Vise:

Looks nicer but a lot pricier too. I also don't know where I would find it, although if it's on the basspro website it might be available in the GTA basspro.

Any thoughts on this?

I bought a set of rubber coated jaw pads from Brownells for about $40.00 and use a plain old 4" shop vise. That way I can grab almost any gun to work on it and have no worries about marks. With a small spirit level you can level up a rifle for scope mounting that gives you true level cross hairs.

I've got a set of those from Cdn Tire. I also use some home made ones, made out of 1/2" plywood and with neoprene mouse pads glued on. A normal vise properly padded is the way to go.

I'm looking for the exact same thing! Was looking to start a thread actually...
I was thinking of maybe building one out of wood, though I can't find the picture I'm referring to. How would you go about building one, or is it worth it just to buy the vise? The stuff from LeBaron's looks pretty decent...

I have an MTM one also, and agree with RePete. I think is cost about $30, portable and fit on a Workmate perfectly. It fits everything from a shotgun to a target rifle with a traditional stock to my target rifle with the spacegun stock. I use it for cleaning, small repairs, sight plumbing and scope mounting.

Thanks for the good reviews guys, I will pick one up.

Rohann, the website for lebarons is here: http://www.lebaron.ca/

They are a small sporting goods chain around Ontario and Quebec with somewhat crappy service and a perpetual lack of things in stock. (To be "lebaroned" is to go to a store and they don't have what you want in stock.)

You could mail order it for them, or maybe you can find it closer to you in BC.

I'll see if I can find it closer in BC, thanks for the links though. I don't care about mounting scopes, I don't have the experience to do that myself yet, this is primarily for cleaning and probably not even for range testing; I'll just use sandbags for that.

Well scope mounting isn't too hard. I wouldn't use this sort of thing for range testing because it isn't adjustable in the way required for that.

For the range I just use a block of wood and some sandbags, although maybe when I have more cash in a few years I'll get a good rest setup for that. But now I really do need something convenient for cleaning.

"...Where is LeBarons?..." Ontario and Quebec only.
"...gun vise..." A regular 4" jawed, bench vise with pads for the jaws on a solid bench will do nicely. A hunk of thick leather pads one well enough. Or a piece of carpet. Anything that will protect the finish on the stock and not slip. You could look into a Black & Decker Workmate will do as well. Although it'd be a bit low.
