Has anyone out there built their own gun vise?
I am after something made out of wood or wood/steel to clamp my rifles for scope mounting, leveling, barrel cleaning etc.
Not really interested in the cheap plastic stuff.
I'm willing to put in the time and effort to make something to last a lifetime.

Thanx

I have several that are made out of plywood. Some fold up, others don't. I don't need something too nice, they get covered in grease, solvent, and black crap that comes out of guns when you shoot hundreds of rounds in the same day. I've seen some very nice commercial ones, but they wouldn't stay nice in my shop for very long.

I use a metal "wood working vise" fastened to a 2x4 perpendicular to the bench. A small towel folded in the jaws provides good soft grip. I've been using this set-up for 15 years.
If you can't picture it I'll post one.

Here's my best attempt at a cheap gun vise. Only paid $4-5 for the clamp at Princess Auto, the rest was just scrap plywood and leftover paint. Has worked well for me, still haven't padded it though...
