I know several people have setup their own "private" pistol ranges on their own property.
I'm looking to do this and have had some initial coms with our CFO's office.
I'm familiar with the range guidelines and this a realistic venture with the parcel of land I own. But I do have some questions specific to topographical features that I'd like to have some answers to before submitting my finalized application. Frankly the trig calculations in the guideline hurt my brain.
If anyone with first hand knowledge and can be my sounding board, I'd very much appreciate a PM.

Thanks CGN!

Iv explored this "range" construction a few years ago (5?). For me the safety hoops were insurmountable (and needless) in my chosen location at the time. (water access only to the property)

Second issue was insurance (not terrible $$ but more than I'd thought). Check into that option.

Materials (sand) availability on site was impossible for me, unless I dug it out of the lake. MNR would love that I'm sure.

What are your topo feature questions? I can dig out the answers I received a few years ago, but the rules will have most likely tightened up since.

Ive since acquired a sizeable piece of land, with some formidable topo features and am thinking of bringing the idea of a range back to the table.

Basically the question is how high does a hill have to be to negate the requirement for a safety area or overhead baffles. This would be based on a 20 meter range shooting from a standing position (pistol).

The other challenges you listed Dodosmike aren't such an issue in this case, fortunately. I can use fill from the site and I'm pretty sure the existing insurance policy for the property won't need to be amended. I will confirm that one.

There was a guy in Sask that did a thread on his "Operator Only" range. I can't remember his name but he was moving back to Germany and had everything for sale. So I'm sure the thread or anyone one he did, is easy to find. In his case he had acres and acres behind the backstop so it didn't have to be very tall. As I recall he wrote that it was easier to get it accomplished then he had guessed. i don't remember him mentioning anything about baffles.

If it was the same gentleman that I am thinking of ; he had a few pics of his handgun range on his property , and it looked like he had dug down grade at an angle so that he was somewhat near below ground level . It looked almost like a tunnel below ground level , but the top was left open . Unfortunately , with Trudeau's current anti gun zeal , the provincial CFOs are probably making things more difficult for ranges all the time , and adding in more restrictions , and tougher guidelines , for anything gun range related .
