I am 16 years old and have never owned a gun before. How would I go about getting a liscense that would allow me to own non-restricted and restricted guns without the supervision of an adult with PAL Liscense.

And also, I am not quite clear on how a PAL liscense works. Lets say I was over 18 and never had a gun before, and I wrote the Non-Restricted Firearms Safety Test and the Restricted Firearms Test and passed both of them, and submitted an application to the Canadian Firearms Centre, they forward it to the Chief Firearms Officer, and I have no crime history whatsoever. Can I now own any gun listed under Restriced or Non-Restriced for whatever reason I want to?Because I had read somewhere that you are not allowed to own guns just for protection, which is stupid and I hope is not true.

Wait till your 18 and take the PAL and RPAL courses/tests. You cannot legaly own a gun until you turn 18 and have the right licenses.

Yes as long as you have the right licenses you can own any restricted/non restricted gun you want too given you have the cash to buy them.

In Canada we are not allowed to use weapons for protection against other people. You are allowed to use them for protection against animals as long as you are in areas that you are permitted to shoot in. Example, you can't shoot a dog that is in your back yard that is trying to attack you. But if you are in the bush and are getting charged at by an angry bear you can use your non restricted firearm for defense.(You can use a restricted firearm for this but you need special authorization from the CFO to carry a restricted firearm)

Or, you can move to the USA... lol

Or you can get your minors licence. Ive had my minors licence since I was fifiteen. This is my last year with it....then I get my PAL/RPAL.

You can't register your own gun with a minor's license. So its no good to you unless you have someone that is loaning you a gun. (usually parent or relative)

Also, as a minor you are not allowed any restricted.

Just do what I do, get your dad to get an RPAL. Pay for the guns yourself and go shooting. Wait until your 18 and transfer everything over to you.

I have been doing this for several years (I am also 16). I have a decent collection of guns and have a lot of fun with them.

I was in your shoes a couple years back. It's unfortunate but that's how it is! I guess their logic is that at 18 one becomes legally liable.

Hold tight, and maybe encourage one of your parents to get licensed and make it a bonding experience for you.

My parents were never "into" firearms. In fact, my mother is slightly anti-firearm, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that she just doesn't understand that they aren't any more of a weapon than her stiletto shoes :p

When you explain to her all the safety and responsibility involved in owning a firearm she starts to noticeably relax around firearms. She's comin' around!

She votes liberal; it's not her fault!!!

Hahah I know :p

She's a very "modern woman" and she is very "liberal" in her thoughts.

Dad votes conservative at least, and so do I. I guess it's worth mentioning that at least she doesn't vote most of the time. But when she does it's usually for the lie-berals.

I would get every single permit etc that I could if I were you.

Get your Minors permit now.

Get your PAL as soon as you are 18!

If the laws change you might not get stuck.

My son is now 14 (turns 15 this April). He got his Minors and will get his PAL ASAP.

The great thing about him having a minors permit is that he will be able to hunt on his own this fall as he will have his full ontario hunting lic.
That coupled with a Minors permit adds one more man to my hunt group and we need more DRIVERS to push out "blood valley"!

...or you could develop a fine taste for antique firearms :p. If you get interested in a certain group of antiques (Martini-Henry's, Webleys, 71 Mausers etc), not only will you be legally able to collect/shoot them, you will also have no money or time left to think about restricted/non-restricted.
