guns vs. ammo prices is it a factor?

Ammo cost does not really matter for me as I reload everything except the 22 and 17wsm. i do start looking for components and start buying once i made my mind of the caliber before I find the gun.

For me it is. If ammo is hard to find I won't even consider getting a firearm in that calibre.
My main consideration is the availability of bulk ammo to keep costs down.

Agreed. I sold off most of my guns and decided to concentrate on just a few commonly available and mostly inexpensive calibers. Cost is a factor for me too. If it costs more than $1 a round to shoot it I don't keep it.

It plays a role for me related to ballistics.

I wouldn't buy a gun that required $41.99 a box .300WSM when a $32.99 box of .300WM will do the same thing.

If it was possible, I'd have all my toys in 7.62x39.. except for the Marlin 45-70.. that one has a special place in my heart. The calibers available when selecting a rifle determine if I can afford to enjoy it, or if I should bother wasting money on another safe dweller.

There is a reason im buying a SKS the same day my PAL arrives in the mail. That reason is cheap ammo and ill go through a lot of it learning how to shoot a rifle.

For me .22 and 7.62x39 are the guns I'll shoot as much as I want. Its nice to have guns you can unload mags for cheap. I don't mind paying $2.00 or more a shot, that will just dictate how much I shoot that particular caliber. It wouldn't stop me from owning more pricey calibers, as long as I still have plenty of cheap ammo for my 22 and sks. That way I can switch it up and shoot a variety of things but still be able to burn through 300+ rounds in a day and not take out a loan.
I find that when ammo is cheap its easier to just plink it all away. But when i know it's costing me considerably more than cheaper ammo I focus more on trigger pull and making them all count.

Knitting is cheap. The price of wool hasn't changed in years and there is plenty on the shelves.

Actually, my wife knits a bit and I can assure you that good wool like good ammo is not cheap either LOL. That said, I reload pretty much everything I can so I don't worry too much about ammo cost when I buy a firearm.
