what would you expect to pay to cut and reweld a mauser bolt?Does anybody do this and let you do your own polishing and finishing[which I presume is where the most of the labour is]

If you want to do your own polishing and finishing, buy a handle (unless it is possible to use the existing one) and have it welded on. Of course, it's better if the welder knows how much of the original root to leave and what angle the new handle needs to be at. Then you may finish as you wish. Gunsmiths seldom like to do a half job since they then (a) have no control over the finished product and (b) are losing money.
For a finished job, you can expect to pay from 125.00 to 200.00. Now, if this was in an auto shop, this would amount to about 1 1/2 hours labour but the gunsmith will likely spend 3 or more. Some gunsmiths do a particularly good job on handles. Sadly, some do not. A good idea to see a sample. Regards, Bill

yes,I can understand them not wanting to only do the welding-a poor finishing job is a reflection on them, even if they had nothing to do with it.Mine is the #96,bent bolt , but still too high for a scope. Not sure if the existing bolt can be used or not

The job on a Swede is complicated by the cutout in the root of the handle for the bolt sleeve. Personally I think that a better job is achieved when a replacement handle is fitted. The stump has to be correctly prepared, the handle fitted, and jigged in place for the welding, which must be done skillfully. I have done a fair number of bolt alterations. I do not think that I would do only the installation and welding, leaving the rest for someone else. There are other issues involved in doing a good finished job than just the cutting and welding. Incidentally, if you saw the bolt just after the welding was done, you might really ask yourself, "What have I gone and done to this bolt?" It isn't pretty.
Unless you want to learn how to do a conversion, as a project, for the sake of doing it yourself, it is probably best to have the job done by someone who can do a first class job.

I am using Square-B one peice base and high rings on mine - works quite well, I am having the safety replaced as part of the trigger job though - certian guy on here did the job as the original install was a piece of crap!!!
The new stuff properly mounted works really well :)

I got a bolt welding jig from Brownells years ago.Saved beaucoup $$$. I borowed a commercial mauser bolt as the set up in the jig. Cut old handle off ,beveled the edges and used a Mauser handle from Brownells . Took it to a shop and had them put a bead on it and filed it smooth myself. Cost?? 2 bucks! JUST DO IT ! JITC
