I have a 1964 Browning BAR 30-06 with 22" barrel that has a small bulge 1.75" back from muzzle. I want to have it cut back 2.25" and threaded for a brake. I live in leduc and have called Sights and Arms in Spruce Grove as they deal with Browning warranty and Rod Henrickson in edmonton, both say they can't do it as they don't have a lathe that can accommodate the barrel. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations to a smith who can cut/crown and thread a BAR?

I have had k&s do barrel work on receivers with triggers still on etc. not sure if they can do a Bar but worth an email.

Curious if I'm missing something - even my smaller lathe can take a gun barrel through the chuck... Or am I missing something BAR specific. (I'm too far, I'd say send it here, but I'm sure you must have someone local :) I would have thought any gunsmith can do this...

No one want to pull barrels from BARs, so you need to do it with the receiver attached. Not many small lathes that can do that.

I know years ago (more than 10) I asked Rod to clip off a couple inchs from one of mine, he mentioned an astronomical price, as he wanted to fab up a jig, and use a mill to do it.

My Standard Modern 1340 lathe could not pass a BAR barrel through the spindle because the spindle is too long, from spider to tips of 4 jaw chuck. I would have to jig the receiver so I could center the breech of the barrel at the chuck, and support the muzzle end with the steady rest. Awkward and time consuming.

Ah, I see. But surely any larger lathe could? I'm pretty sure my larger lathe has enough clearance though I have not checked...

If not, I'd use the jig that come with a crowning tool - it centers in the barrel so could do it without a lathe even...
