Good Morning All,

I have been thinking about it and I want to turn one of the Norcs I just bought into a shorty, can anyone recommend a good gunsmith I can send it to? Someone that more or less specializes in doing such a bob?

We @ the Wet Coast 14 Group have been using Dlask.
He has done several for us,
but we usually bring him in ONLY the stripped barrel.

He does a terrific job, does it quick, does it cheap.

If you send in the whole rifle instead of the stripped barrel, it will cost you more for shipping AND for labor.

Usually, with gunsmiths, as with most other trades, you can have any two of the above, not all three ....

I am thinking I might do the same with my new Norincos I have 2 and I want to get the barrel shrunk down to 18.75" on one or both. Can anyone PM me with contact info for a good Gunsmith in Edmonton or western canada is fine as well. I also am just wondering but isn't there issues with the Chrome lined barrel chipping if you cut it?

Use a chop saw to cut it and then let the g'smith finish it off to the right length. We at the Wet Coast m 14s group hug meet chopped it off just at the hider.Turned out ggggreat.

HI guys. Just trying to get in on the action lol. What about in the maritimes? I'm in Bathurst New Brunswick, any smiths around here?

Can't recommend anyone off the top of my head. Read the sticky notes when this forum opens. Lots of good info there. Hungry has given clinics in a few places.

You don't have to take the barrel out of the receiver.
You can send them the receiverwith the barrel in it
and they can do it since they have the tooling to do it like that.
I think that's $40.

Or you can send the complete firearm and that is an additional $20.

Looks like I was able to find someone here in calgary to do it, will be calling him tomorrow.

That being said is there any downsides to operation of my rifle by shorting the barrel? I know it will require some work on the sights to index them properly although that is not so much an issue cause I will be putting a scope on it.

Nothing it works great

I was wondering if shortening the barrel had any affect on performance because their was less time to "charge":)confused:) the gas system. Like with shorty AR's but from all the guys doing it it must work.

So let me get this straight Dlask will cut the barrel down and reattach the flash hider to make the rifle look like it just came from the factory with the short barrel all for 40-60 dollars plus shipping? If that is the case I am definitely giving them a call. M14 with a 18.75-18.5 inch barrel that is worth it to me.

I sent Dlask an e-mail asking if they would do the trick with the original flash hider, and they said that they wouldn't do it.
I'll have to find someone else.

Hi ,sorry we do only for standard flash hiders .
Thanks

Joe will CROWN the barrel and thread 1/2" X 28 TPI for the standard AR 15 type flash hider. If you are planning on fitting an AR 15 MUZZLE BRAKE to your M-14 shorty, make sure the gunsmith knows it is going on a .30 Cal barrel. Most AR 15 muzzle brakes are set up for .223 bullets, which could be very interesting on a .30 cal M-14.

PS:
I used the DLASK shorty muzzle brake on my last M-14 shorty. The recoil reduction is quite noticeable. Makes the shorty M-14 kick about like a Ruger mini 30 or an SKS ... in other wiords, not much.

Read Misanthropist's post on turning a stock flash hider into a thread-on flash hider. That way you can send you barrel to anyone, have them thread it, and put the stock flash hider back on. Otherwise I think you will have trouble finding anyone who wants to do the job since it requires machining grooves into the end of the barrel. If the grooves are off then your sights are off.

funny..... I am picking up two of my flash hiders today from Joe, both bored out and threaded inside to 1/2 x 28 tpi..... to fit an 18.5" barrel, threaded by dlask with 1/2 x 28
I know that this job is extremely hard on tooling due to the VERY hard metal of the norc flash hider, But these two I'm pickin up make over a dozen done up by dlask that i know of.
perhaps joe misunderstood you and thought you wanted the shortened barrel to be machined to fit the norc flash hider in it's original state..... this, can not be done
