Ive invested in the gear to swap my own barrels, looking for a smith that will spin up Tikka shouldered prefits so I don’t have to send in my action.

Thanks

Maybe I’m out to lunch, but a shouldered barrel wouldn’t be a prefit, would it? The idea of a prefit is that you can set the headspace yourself with the barrel nut. Shouldered, I think you would have to send in your action, because you would need to adjust the shoulder for headspace as each action will be different.

I’m not a fan of barrel nuts, I’d prefer a shouldered.

Some actions are held to tight tolerances so you can do shouldered prefits, tikka being one.

With big companies offering quality shouldered prefits why look for a gunsmith? ... And I think the majority of smiths would decline.

From what I found they are limited to just a few calibers, or long wait times for less common cartridges. I’d be happy with a barrel from a big company, I’m looking for a 28” 6BR.

OK. You want to supply a barrel with a threaded shank, and have a gunsmith chamber it and return it to you without having the receiver and bolt?
And expect that you will be able to torque it in, and it will headspace dead on?

Id supply a blank, they thread/chamber it. Google it, lots of suppliers doing it, im having a hard time finding my particular specs for barrel and chamber.

So any barrel from a Tikka can be screwed to any other Tikka action and headspacing will be good without checking it?

Yes, but not checking it would be dumb

Shouldered, threaded and chambered barrels are generally supplied either short shanked or short chambered. The former can be fitted without a reamer, the latter could probably be fitted without a lathe.
Barrel vise and action wrench would be needed with either.
There are businesses that will install a barrel and keep the specs on file and will subsequently supply another barrel finished and ready to go. Some will supply replacement barrels for their rifles without needing the action for fitting.
I suspect most gunsmiths would be nervous about supplying a shouldered ready to install barrel based on either theoretical specs or customer supplied measurements.

Been supplying shouldered prefits for Tikka T3s for a while now... Of course, I add the warning to check and confirm headspace and adjust as needed, but so far, all have gone on to spec.

Prefits in all sorts of options are possible.
