Gunsmith with a 7X57AI reamer and threads metric

There is one out here in Kamloops who has a reamer. I am curious but why do you want one. I been thinking of chambering one up for an F-Class rifle so your post struck me as interesting. I have a dummy cartridge and it looks like a skinny 284 Win.

Thanks

For me the plan is to use it as a target/ everything rifle. Banging steel and hunting a bit.
I spent some time talking to Jerry about 7mm chamberings.
Basically I think it'll be a great medium cartridge. The 284 is awesome. But brass is expensive and hard to find and expensive.
The 280AI is bigger than I wanted for a go to target rifle. The 7mm08 or the AI version was my other option. But I don't think it's optimized in a short action with some of the bigger bullets. So if I'm gonna go LA I might as well outrun the 7mm08 by a bit.
The Mauser has a long neck so lots of bullet seating options.
Brass is reasonably priced. And easy enough to find.
Barrel life should be decent. Recoil manageable. And price not stupid.

Thas my opinion on a cartridge I've never used any ways.

I had been talking to Dennis and if I don't end up with a tikka he will probably be doing the work on the rifle. I am pretty sure he said he did not have one when I was talking to him.

CanuckR Do you know the Case capacity of that cartridge? mmmaybe I want on but only in 27x57AI, sounds like pretty good compromise between 08 and 06.

I have read a few different volumes, but this from a thread on LRH "284 is 64.59gr, 7x57 is 55.55gr,7x57AI is 61.44gr." which is similar to some other things I have read, I am assuming it will all depend on brass manufacturer as well a bit.

I don't have a 7x57AI case to measure myself.

From the Lee reloading manual 2nd edition

7x57 has a "useful case capacity" of 3.68CC

284 Win is 3.97CC

Assuming improving the 7x57 gains 8% as a ball park = 3.97CC

I have no idea what Lee did to come up with Useful case capacity but as a relative comparison, it has been very helpful to me and works as a very good ballpark.

I would expect the 284 as F shooters use it, will still have the larger case volume as we can throat much longer then standard but they are awfully close. If willing to wildcat further, you can always push the shoulder ahead to gain more case capacity.

And Mauser brass gets away from donuts and very expensive brass... primer pockets should stay tight far longer too.

For the 180's, it should be a great option... for the 195's, I would go bigger case.... if maxing ballistics is important.

Would be great for a 270 something or other...

Jerry
