Hello guys

I have never been good with home made stuff so for a good conversion I want to consult the professionals.

Once I acquire the parts, which gun smith services in Canada can I rely on to complete the conversion?

on a different note, will I be completely crazy to send the SL8 to tommybuilt to get him to do the conversion?
Has anyone done that?

How hard is it the export the gun out of Canada and import it back into Canada?

Those of you that have done the conversion, how did you do it?

If you are in Southwestern Ontario (London) Id be happy to help. I've done a couple, and have the mandrel to change barrels too. I've played with many of the various lowers, rails, and barrels if you have any questions.

Tommybuilt is great, just not sure how to legally get the rifle to him and back. You'd probably need to use IRUNGUNS.

Out of curiosity, which conversion do you plan to do?

thanks for the reply

I live in Toronto and yeah can definitely pay you a visit if the need arises

after seeing pictures I noticed that many people have done their conversion without cutting any materials (except the magwell i guess)
It seems as if there are SL8 stocks available to purchase and you can just install them. (I know HERA makes them for AR and ACR stock but I still like the G36 style stocks more)

But I can't seem to find anything similar, what type of stock is that? The only one I can find is Tommybuilt custom SL8 stock which looks like this

I want to keep the barrel as NR so basically no G36C

quite possibly a full length (might cut it down to 18.5 inches) barrel with a G36 carry handle optic on top.

I really like the G36 stocks so I guess no HERA receivers for me :(
unless I am missing something and HERA receivers can actually take G36 stocks

Oh wow thanks, that does make everything so much easier

On a side note, Which importer did you use the get the parts from the US?
It is a lot of parts, how much of a pain in the ass was the process?

There, um, is a sticky in this forum on how to do it, if I recall correctly. Like, ten pages or so of great information?

This. Read the entire SL8 conversion sticky, and then you can start to have an informed discussion regarding the relative merits of the various "stock block" conversions versus grafting a G36 Receiver Stub onto a chopped SL8 (eg the Tommy Built or Chopsticks Kid Full conversions). Right now, you guys are talking all over each other with differing baseline understandings of the various conversion methods, let alone their pros and cons. Do some research first, and then those who have done some of the conversions would more likely be willing to pitch in with their insights. But not at the expense of having to bring you up to speed when there is a perfectly good tutorial which will answer all of the basic FAQs with a patient read of the provided material. This is akin to using the search function before asking the same basic questions that are beat to death seemingly every day by folks new to the site..... Just saying.

I have the G36 lower which includes the folding stock. I hope I know what I am talking about, if not it speaks for itself

You most likely have the "Top Notch", "Black Cat" or "Special Weaoons" conversion lower receiver (the company frequently changed names), which is the cheapest and simplest version of the "stock block" conversions kits. All you need to do is to transfer over your lower receiver parts and swap the buttstock for a shorter G36C version to compensate for the longer upper receiver. The last "Top Notch" lower I sold went for $500 CAD in like new condition....

The next step up in the G36 conversion world is the HDPS Stock Block, which allows the use of a genuine G36 Trigger Housing with select-fire markings (purely cosmetic in nature). After that comes the full-up receiver conversion involving cutting off the end of the SL8 Receiver and replacing it with a grafted-on G36 Receiver Stub to achieve the proper factory length of pull. How far you go depends on your budget and confidence level when it comes to somebody hacking up your $2600 rifle....

Best of luck with your G36 project, whatever form it takes!

Sorry for posting about this if it triggers you but I was rather confused by the sticky thread for some reason.
I did search quite a bit before I posted here but I just never found the right info to clear things up for me
But yeah now I got everything figured out with the help of a very patient and nice member.
