Gunsmithing question: removing rear sight

I have a Savage Mark ii .22 that I am mounting a scope on. The front of the scope hits the rear sight with the rings I have. Does the rear site come off or should I just buy medium height rings?

That sight will drift out with a soft punch and hammer.

IMHO you should just go for the medium height rings. Thousands of those excellent rear sights get removed every year, only to disappear forever into a Gremlin's hole.

Just tap it out of its dovetail. A non-marring punch is a good idea.
