Gunsmithing taps and dies.

KBC has them but they are on my sh*t list. If you order by credit card they want enough information almost to the point of the colour of underwear you wear.

Anyway any good industrial supply store can get them for you; the people that supply machine shops.

Brownells has them also www.brownells.com

You could try Travers tools also. I don't feel like digging out my catalog atm to see if they have it, but they have a very large selection and deliver anywhere in Canada.

Thomas Skinner will also ship stuff, as will Acklands-Grainger, although I don't know how good a selection of taps and dies A-G has now.

*Actually I just looked through my catalog and Travers offers both as well.

8 x 36 is a bit odd for guns.... usually 6 x 48 and 8 x 40. I order mine from Brownells - no problem it isn't a gun part...

Guntech, the extractor screw on a U.S. built #4 mk2 appears to me to be 8x36 please correct me if I'm wrong, you'd save me some grief.

There's nothing special about any tap or die used by a smithy. Look in the Yellow Pages for a Tool and Die supply place, like Arwen says. Princess Auto would be a good place to look too.

Try ACT Equipment Sales, Bay 10 7003-30 St SE in Calgary Tel: 279-6016. I have ordered sets of 6-48 dies and a lot of old oddball British taps from them. They may have some in stock, if not they can get them in a day or two.
You also might try Triad Fasteners & Industrial Products 2025 41 Ave NE Tel: 287-3444 they carry a lot of taps including the biggest metric selection in Calgary.

Princess Auto, Acklands, Calgary Fasteners & Tools don't carry them and are not too keen on bringing them in

Finer

Gunsmith taps are usually finer than what you can get at Princess Auto. You won't find #6-48 or #8-40 at PA.

I got my #6-48 tap from SIR of all places.

I have no idea about the U.S. built #4 screw. I was referring to real guns.

Usually taps and dies are purchased for the volume they will be used. 6 x 48 and 8 x 40 are the most common screw size for scope mounts. They are considered a national special thread.

8 x 36 is not common to many guns that I know of, but it may be what you want.

It appears that they use thread sizes 6-40, 8-36 and ¼-28 on these guns, all standard NF sizes, before you order taps, you would be well advised to look into this a little further.

The tools Princess Auto sell are crap, and they don't have gunsmithing type-pitch tools.
