Hey fellas, I was just thinking that this particular forum should have a sticky labled "Tricks & Tips", or even a sub-forum that everyone could add to. No discussions per say, but things that have worked for you on the gun bench. Your ideas could be about anything firearm related. Nuts and bolts, springs, pins, even packaging and shipping.

Like all of you, I search the various forums and threads for ideas on "how to's" and whatnot. A whole lot of times I search through forums and threads for a couple of hours and come up with nada, sometimes I score.

If there was a sub-forum or sticky dedicated to the ideas we all want to share, it would make our searches much easier.

It was just an idea and thought I'd throw it out there.

I'll be first,

When I was winterizing my house last fall, with particular attention to some older, copper water pipes, I bought some 1/2" and 3/4" foam tubing to insulate them.

Well, I had a bunch left over. With winter coming I knew that I would be selling small parts, rifles, shotguns etc and always ran out of packing material. Especially for barrels. Guess what those foam tubes I had left over came in handy for.

Best protector for barrels inside a shipping box I have ever found. Scraps make perfect for small parts as well.

So, what are your bench tricks? Enquiring minds want to know:D

+1 for the idea, I'm sure there are tonnes of home-brew gunsmiths who could prevent some of us from replicating their mistakes!

You mean that works better than Doug's socks? :D
It can't have the rust inhibiting odor! :dancingbanana:

Works waaaaaay better than Doug's toe warmers:dancingbanana: Man, Johnny, that's some nasty stuff:p

Since the foam tubes are soft, all you do is add the essence that's at hand (I prefer CLP to 10 day old toe jam:D)

The buyer then recieves a sweet smelling, well lubricated foam tube that may or may not have further use/uses:dancingbanana:

The very best hint I could give is to use screw drivers that FIT the screw you are using.
Good gunsmith screw driver kits are available in most gun shops, or from Brownells, for an excellent big kit.

Absolutely, and buy the best you can afford. Nothing worse than marring the finish of a rifle or handgun with a crappy screw driver.

i have a tip, if you are trying to properly temper 4130 or similar carbon steel's. heat them with torch until red, quench in oil and allow to cool. then place in pan of brake fluid, deep enough to mostly cover part's, pour a small amount of gas on brake fluid and light it. allow to burn until all brake fluid is consumed, part's will be perfectly tempered.
