Gunsmiths in Saskatoon w/ m14/m305 experience?

I have ordered a new Norc M305 from a CGN member, and wanted to get the headspace checked before I shot it. I spoke to 3 smiths in saskatoon that were unaware of any differences between 308 and 7.62, which didn't leave me with a real high confidence level.

Can anyone recommend someone that they would trust with this apparently not so trivial task? Someone with that doesn't refer to the rifles as 'Chinese junk' as soon as you mention it would be nice :)
 
Ya, I know I can shoot milsurp in it without too many worries, but wanted to have it checked on the off chance it was tight enought to use commercial ammo in it.

Other than that, was there some other inside joke I'm missing?

you will be fine with both ammo. you can order a .308 go guage and a 7.62 go guage from brownells and get some one thou feeler guages and check headpsace yerself.

for the average joe m14s owner .... headspace is a non issue.... unless the bolt is WAY over the 7.62 no go or field guage. If you want a match chambered norc and are fitting ina usgi bolt to achieve .308 headspace.... then the guages are essential.

for now... go shoot her... stay under 174 grains with what ever ammo you choose and yer good to go
 
Okey dokey, that's good to hear.

I've found a forum member close by that's willing to check it out. I was planning on reloading for it eventually as time, $, and space allow, so I'd like to know for sure what it is anyways.

I have a Norinko that i have some fun with.
I only neck size the cases and every 4 or 5 reloadings when the case has stretched enough to be on the very high side of the length then i do a full length case size just enough to just touch the sholder butnot push it back then retrim lenth
but I'm only doing light load just past min from the win book 748 and a 150g bullet target shooting at 100yd and im very happy with my groups and never had a problem

I am surprised at the exclusivity of your selection standards. Don't let one phone call turn you off.

If someone called out of the blue and asked a difficult question, while there were paying customers in the shop, wouldn't you be inclined to give a simple answer? I want my gunsmith using his tools, working, learning and improving his machine skills, or finding some miserable lost part for me. Gunsmiths are not likely to prowl the internet, reading through post after post. Hell, I doubt if Jason at Gunco eats a meal when the doors are open.

Jim Dugan in Tunetown was an accurate bolt action rifle builder in the '90s. Whether or not he is still running a shop is another question. He might know something about USGI M14 rifles, but I doubt he had had much experience with Chinese guns - unless someone gives him a chance.
