Dennis (or other experienced gunsmiths); I noticed a slight ring of corrosion around my barrel sling swivel. It may have been there for a very long time, but somehow I noticed today. Does this have anything to do with brazing/welding? The photo makes it look worse than it actually is. I can only describe it as a slight roughness around the seam. This riflle has ALWAYS had a good coat of oil on it. My gunlocker is dry with a 25W lightbulb always running + a Remington mini-dehumidifier. I don't think moisture is the culprit.

Bluing compound or bluing salts wicking under the band perhaps. Or just a bit of moisture got trapped there.

Nice clear pictures. Shows the bare metal spots where swivel loop rubs against the band too.

6.5x55 Swede? If so the band was sweated on with soft solder. The ones I took apart were able to be removed with a propane torch and temperatures that did not affect the bluing. There was a bit of a gap under there.

Cheers

7x57 Mauser sporter. Yeah, it's a bit of rust along the seam. I cleaned most of it off moments ago with 0000 steel wool and some G96. It all came off. It's a very small area, and not very noticeable.

Good pictures!

Keep using the G96 and you should be able to keep it at bay...

I wish more people were capable of taking a photograph. So many use poor lighting , lay the rifle on a lousy background, get the wrong exposure and out of focus and the subject a small portion in a huge photo.

Warm it up with a 100 watt light bulb or a propane torch... any moisture will be gone and as it cools it will suck the G96 back in...

I poured a kettle of boiling water over the area to clean out any trapped salts. The high temps allowed the area to dry. I sprayed with G96.
There is a sliver of area on the edge of the band where the bluing is now gone, but most of the rust is now gone. I am certain the G96 seeped into the area.

I will re-touch the lighter area with a blue pen. The area is so small, however, that I don't want to go over-board and mess things up. Glad I caught this when I did.
