I know there will be guys on the board who already use Dennis for work who hate posts like this because they want to keep him all for themselves, but Dennis deserves a good word.
I use him a fair bit for work, and it's always fast, and more importantly done right. Fair prices too.
I recently had him do some work for me on my latest project. I bought a 25-284 from Martinbns that Rembo had built a couple years back. A ridiculously accurate rifle with the fluted varmint contour King barrel and Boyd's laminate stock, it balanced great and Rick's work was impeccable. But it was designed to shoot stuff from where you stood; not chase them down.
I wanted a rifle that would do both!
I had a McMillan standard fill classic stock ordered for another rifle, but I decided I really wanted this 25-284 barreled action to work. That's where Dennis comes in. When the McMillan stock arrived, I sent it and the barreled action to him. I asked him to bob the barrel and turn it way down until it balanced in the stock with scope on board. Exactly as per my directions, he cut the barrel to 23" and turned it down to fit the stock (M700 magnum factory contour). This left just a bit of the flutes intact, so it looks really nice. Think of it as a LVSF in 25-284 caliber. He then bedded the barreled action in the McMillan stock. He also adjusted the trigger and extractor for me.
The final rifle weighs about 8 pounds with my old 3.5-10X40 Leupold on board, and balances at the front of the guard screw. The fit and balance are absolutely perfect. It's feels alive in the hands but hangs on target perfectly. It feeds and functions like it is supposed to. There's nothing that could be done to this rifle to improve it in my eyes.
In the past couple of days I have tried 100 grain Ballistic Tips and Barnes TSX bullets in it. Any worries of turning it down adversely affecting the barrels accuracy are for naught; this thing is still a shooter! 56 grains of RL22 with the 100 BTip clock 3280 fps and shoot into 0.6"-0.7" at 100 yards. That an average of 4 3-shot groups. The 100TSX and 55 grains of RL22 clock 3310 fps and 3 3-shot groups have all grouped right at 3/4" at 100 yards. Best of all hot barrel or cold, clean or dirty the POI stays the same...no surprises.
Lightning may strike while I say this, but I am quite sure this rifle is a keeper! I can't imagine a better rifle for coyotes in windy weather, wolves and deer.
Call this a long-winded way of me saying thanks to Dennis Sorensen. He does great work!
