I just came across these online, and tried to do a search to find info relevant to Canada, has anyone come acros these? Are they restricted? They appear to be made by Walther-Umarex, who also make M4 and M16 style .22s which are classifed as restricted. I like the idea of .22 replicas, but not the hassle of being restricted.

Advertised as a replica of the MP5, and therefore deemed prohibited.

Found on the RCMP website:

The firearms of the designs commonly known as the MP5 submachine gun and MP5 carbine, and any variants or modified versions of them, including the Heckler and Koch:
HK MP5;
HK MP5A2;
HK MP5A3;
HK MP5K;
HK MP5SD;
HK MP5SD1;
HK MP5SD2;
HK MP5SD3;
HK 94;
HK 94A2; and,
HK 94A3.

The A5 isn't listed, but the SD is, which is essentially a 25 round version of the A5, whereas the A5 is a 10 rounder.

Sorry to burst your bubble- I'd like to own a .22LR MP5 someday too

thats too bad, but I expected as much. though according to the site, both models take 10 or 25 mags, but the SD model has the "sound dampener" style compensator

Just out of curiousity...is there an actual FRT entry specifiying these are prohibited? I'm not doubting they are (based as an MP5 variant)...just wondering if that actually is the case or we just have a bunch of guys making an assumption? (which, based on the GSG fiasco would be a very valid assumption to make).

Like I said...not doubting...would just like someone to comfirm they've looked at the FRT entry for it.

As I recall, the RCMP got a brochure for the GSG, and based on that, they deemed it prohibited. There will be an FRT for the GSG.

So based on that precedent, even if there isn't an FRT for the HK, do you think there is any chance of it not being prohibited? And considering the MP5SD is also a 22 the actions are likely identical.

Comes back to their interpretation of law that names specific models "and variants" and how they have decided to interpret the regulations. In this case it would clearly be a variant of the MP5SD

There are so many cool .22 variants avail, i'd love to own, i like the Umarex/HK 416 .22, and all the mp5 variants.... its a shame our RCMP and whatever other governing bodies are so screwed up in their classification principals. retarded barely describes it.

That pissed me off!

For me fight to be able to get those gun here are more important than the long gun registery fight.

Variant...Common ist a 22lr not a variant...The gun cannot be modifier to fire 9mm or so..

How close (or far away) does a replica have to be before it is considered a "replica"? How much do you have to change the look of a 10/22 skin before it is not deemed a variant/replica but still holds a definate similarity?

If the internal parts interchange it's a variant no matter how you dress it outside

If the external looks the same it's a variant no matter how you change it inside

This is now added to the list of I-wish-it-the-definition-of-variant-was-clarified

GSG-5
S&W M&P15-22
Colt M4
Umarex HK416
Umarex MP5
Umarex MP5SD
Sig Sauer 522

Fair enough. What is considered "the same"? We have sr-22's, mossberg tacticals and a few others that have no restrictions at all. I would love to build an mp5 like chassis for my 10 22. When i say "like", i mean similar in shape and size but not an exact replica. Just curious how much different is has to be before the rcmp gets their panties in a knot.

the mp5sd is suppressed , that is why it is prohibited

sd= Schalldämpfer which translates into sound dampened

MP5SD5: Fixed buttstock, 3-round burst trigger group, integrated suppressor.
MP5SD6: Retractable buttstock, 3-round burst trigger group, integrated suppressor.
MP5SD-N1: Retractable buttstock, "Navy" trigger group, KAC stainless steel suppressor.
MP5SD-N2: Fixed buttstock, "Navy" trigger group, KAC stainless steel suppressor.

Search MP5A4/A2

Not all MP5s are supressed.

In fact I dont think any "replicas" of the MP5 in .22 come supressed. Some with a Mock supressor for looks/cover the barrel but none with a working sound supressor.

Yeah this "replica" and "Variant of" is just 'lawyer speak' for "we dont want you to have it" (I think AR and "variants" is a perfect example)

PS. AR = Assault Rifle... heh (JK)
