There are restrictions in the US about importing rifles that feed from double stack magazines. So we have a minor advantage in Canada when it comes to modding an SL8 since they are already double stack. Two small tabs inside the receiver above the magazine well have to filed out but this is a very small job. An American SL8 (and I assume some earlier models in Canada) need the G36 bolt face to feed from G36/AR15 magazines.
A newer Canadian SL8 only needs the tabs ground/filed out and take G36 mags out of the box. Good luck finding G36 mags anywhere in North American at a reasonable price.
Installing the AR15 mag well can be done at home in a few minutes with basic tools. I first have the metal one from Wolverine Supplies. It didn't install easily, didn't feed well and mags didn't drop free. I was able to return it and I want it known that Wolverine is an awesome retailer and very very good to work with. They refunded me for the mag well conversion.
I know have a black plastic mag well adapter from an outfit in florida where I also got my folding stock from. It was a snap to install, and after some filling the AR mags drop free. The bolt will not lock open on the last shot, I don't know if this is because of the AR mag springs or the aftermarket stock but it's annoying. Is anyone else having this problem with their AR mag mod?
I'm not crazy about the left sided magazine release either but whatever, I can use cheap AR mags, and I have to get some of those 10 rounders next!
