H&K416/SA80 MAGAZINES

Like to hear some thoughts on them, like who has him, who has used them. Opinions on them in general.

Heavy and they suck

Would get them for free in Iraq, and bought PMAG's...

The steel body is a drop once and toss design, as the steel lips dont take well to impacts.

They are also TERRIBLE in the 10.4 Hk416 platform -

thats a great bit of info. I know that they commanded a high price since they were "HK" marked...

PMags are the way to go!!!

Interesting most people i have spoke with generally feel they are the 2nd best next to Pmags, but the best for steel mags.

The feed lips wear out rather quickly IIRC.

I think that stainless steel (since its harder usually) would be a better material than carbon steel like the HK mags are.

And to think that before PMAGs came around, the HK mags were supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread! Bizarre that they actually blow chunks... I would have thought HK would have done their homework, but apparently not!

I will admit it isa real 30rd mag - unlike USGI mags

However while we where all hot and horny over them intially - when you start using them - they run for about 3-4 reloads in a short gun (Mk18 or Hk416) and even in M4's when you start dropping them during reloads they get trashed.

Most ranges in North America are not concrete - and CQB houses you rarely run dry allowing for controlled reloads -- thus whne you get into the third world and drop mags on concrete etc --- they die quick - and the trend to short guns (again) is leading to poor performance with these.

Remember this mag was designed for the SA80A2 - where it replaced the craptastic mag, and for us in a SA80A2 its the best thing on the gun.

Like Kev said, when we first got them we thought they were the cats ass. By the time I was asked if I wanted another load of them (free), I had already ditched them for USGI mags with magpul followers and ranger plates. They simply weren't reliable after a bit of use, they were larger, and heavier than normal mags.

Along came the P-Mags and the rest is history...

Gets better....

Regarding HK Mags, No Safety of Use message, just this from the Log side as to why units orders are being cancelled:

All,
If your units are ordering 015205992 and they are getting rejected because they have issues. You need to continue to order the old
009215004 magazine until problems are fixed.

Suggest to SSAs to check Due in/out and notify each customer and both unit and SSA cancel doc#.

Magazine Cartridge NSN 1005015205992 that for each requisition received for replenishments, there is a 'CA' fatal reject processed by the Item Manager. The message reads:

FIELD PROBLEMS WERE IDENTIFIED WITH THE STEEL MAGAZINE(1005-01-520-5992). NO STEEL MAGAZINES WILL BE AVAILABLE UNTIL CORRECTIVE ACTION IS IMPLEMENTED & TESTED TO ASSURE PROPER OPERATION.
REQUIREMENTS FOR 30 ROUND MAG CAN BE FILLED WITH THE ALUMINUM MAGAZINE NSN 1005-00-921-5004.

I've found that the HK mag is reliable and feeds well in the HK416. I haven't tried it in any other gun. The problem is that when they are loaded they are very heavy. As has been already said, when dropping / training / fighting with the heavy mag the lips bend. I don't think the overall weight was taken into consideration when the mag was designed.

PMags stand up to being dropped loaded / kicked / stepped on / ect. much better.
