H&R break barrel .22

Hey Jan1968~I've contemplated getting an H&R literally dozens of times...price is attractive, action is simple, etc. Every once in a while, I stop by Le Baron in Markham and ask to see one, and in the wake of that, think "yeah...no temptation". I don't hate them, I think they're probably really decent guns for the modest asking price...they just really "feel" cheap to me an if I'm honest with myself, I know I'd look into my safe and see it there among nicer .22s...and never reach for it. I can see them being interesting in a hunting capacity (in larger calibers) where quick follow-up shots are seldom necessary. To your question about .22 shorts~the H&R or any single-shot bolt would feed shorts just fine.
I, too, have tried to make adult-sized guns "fit" the young shooters in my family too, with no luck. I broke-down and bought a Savage Rascal (pictured below) and it's quickly become a favorite. I had tried a single-shot Cooey, but those things are difficult to #### for young/small-framed shooters and even more difficult to load. The Rascal cocks on the upstroke of the bolt, it has a spring-loaded/collapsible feed ramp that allows the shooter to simply drop the round in the chamber, and slide the bolt forward. Comes equipped with the Accutrigger too, which is a nice bonus. H&Rs are about $150 if memory serves, this Rascal was about $189.

I have the lr and mag, both very well made small easy to pack rifles, lowest priced 22mag you can get, i think i paid 160 or so. I don t think any other companys make a hinge break 22. Also very easy to scope with a #82 weaver base.
I've had a bunch of single shot H&R's over the years and have always thought they offered excellent value for your dollar. One of the ones I currently own is a .17HM2 which my granddaughter loves to shoot. I have an ATI collapsable M4-style stock on it, and it is easy to shorten it to fit her, and then quickly extend it to maximum length to use it myself. The gun shoots very well and has a good, eminently shootable trigger.

I've my Sportster in .22LR for several years now, I absolutely love it. It's very accurate, simple to use, safe and excellent value for the money.
Interesting. The 17M2 might be the only one I'd be tempted to get right now, as I'm curious about that round....but consider it to be of limited usefulness here in S. Ontario. A modestly-priced rifle might be a good way to test-drive the .17M2 if I could find one! Drop me a line if you think you might be interested in selling it.
i got a hinged one, surprised how heavy it is for such small gun. but it is milled from one whole piece so not much you can do. also wish the auto ejector would slam it out like a shotgun does, but it just slowly pushes it. gotta figure out how to attach the rail for scope as it does have the screws for it.
