I just bought a H&R 45/70 Buffalo Classic and am looking for some powders to try with 405 lead cast bullets.
I am new to lead casts and the manuals I have are showing powders that I do not have but am willing to buy what works.
I do have H-4895,4831, BLc2, 322 some of what may work.
Any Ideas what to start at or what preasures i should keep to I am assuming to load to modern standards.

Thank you
Jay

No that is not the case, the acton on a BC is the same action as all of the centerfire rifles (it just looks different so it can handle anything the strong marlins can handle. Look for SB@ on the action. If the sb2 action can handle 270 and 30-06 or for that matter 450 marlin it can handle more that trapdoor springfield loads. If in doubt call NEF.

You might consider 3031 as well. My strong load for my 1885 is a very healthy dose of 3031 under a 418 gr (from my mould) cast bullet.

I find it hard to believe that the break actions can handle the same amount of pressure as an 1895 (which would mean the same as an 1885 or Ruger #1). I wouldn't do it, but that's me. Contact NEF to be sure.

I do believe that ruger #1 loads are hotter than marlin loads.
Aren't loading manuals ordered like this

Class 3 -Trapdoors and alike
Class 2 - Strong moder lever guns ... Marlins and such
Class 1 - Ruger #1 and alike

The 450 marlin is off of their completed rife list but it is still listed on the barrel accessory program http://www.hr1871.com/barrelAcc/index.htm and that runs at about 40,000 psi trapdoor loads run at most 28,000.

The big problem with big loads in the handi is it will rattle your teeth loose, the BC have a bit more wieght but lots of guys are putting bird shot or mucury recoil reducers in the stock bolt hole. Depending on how tough you are you may hit you recoil limit before the pressure limit.

I finally rememberd which of the hot 45/70 companies says on there site that thier ammo works in a handi. It's bufflo bore.

http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#4570

From thier site
All .45-70 Magnum loadings are intended for use in the following firearms:
All Marlin Model 1895 variations made since 1972
Browning Model 1885 and 1886
New England Arms Handi-Rifle
Ruger #1 and #3
T/C Encore
Shiloh, Christian and Pedersoli Sharps
New Production Winchester 1886

A 405 @ 2000 fps  hold on to your fillings

Sorry for beating the dead horse but you'll find 45/70 +P loads on the garrett site

This is the info I recieved from Chuck Hawks:

The SAAMI maximum average pressure standard for the .45-70 is 28,000 cup. I would suggest that you do not exceed that pressure under any circumstances. Most reloading manuals divide .45-70 loads into three categories, standard SAAMI pressure loads (trapdoor Springfield loads), high pressure loads for modern Marlin and Browning lever action rifles, and extra high pressure loads for the Ruger No. 1 and Browning High Wall. If I were loading for an H&R single shot rifle I would stick with loads in the first category.

Presently I'm using 42.9grs of IMR 4198 with C.U.P. not exceeding 27,000 cup,
A max load for me would be 51.0 grs of said powder
