Hello I’ve had this Garand sitting here for a long time. It looks complete. Stock is loose with quite a bit of pitting around the receiver. I guess this dates around mid 1950s. What should I look for before shooting it. Any info regarding this M1 would be appreciated. Cheers

Stock is loose?? Which part? I suspect you're saying the forward hand guard is loose?? It's supposed to be.

If the action area is loose, tighten it up or it won't shoot well. Takes a bit of effort though.

That rifle looks like it was neglected at one time. Hopefully the bore is better than the muzzle indicates

I would Clean the bore

Do A funchion check / safety check

Check that the firing pin is not sticky

and as a Min replace recoil spring and grease the parts that need greasing

Use the correct ammo for the garand or you will bend oprod

if the barrel is bad ... a replacement barrel can be installed

from the looks of the rifle, you could have one of the very few rifles that has the same parts as it left the Factory ..... Very rare

but if everthing looks good on the rifle .. replace recoil spring before firing it

Great info thank you. I would guess it’s a bit of a neglected example but completely stock. It’s hard to tell what the bits & pieces are when you have drawing numbers that I can’t quite tabulate. It’s still a nice piece and I hope to bring it to some body that knows and could enlighten me. I’ll look for a new spring and as a side note the bore looks quite acceptable. Cheers much appreciated.
PS Thanks for the link on stripping and pre fire check. Very good. I’ve got a couple M305s but this is my first M1Garand,and I can see the fascination with this beautifully constructed arm. It’s been in the back and now seeing the light of day. I have the reg papers for it from the bad old days.
Lol Funny how ones interests in this hobby ebb and flow. Cheers
